RANDY YEARS, STEVE PAINE, RICH KARLNOSKI BIG WINNERS AT BLACK ROCK
DUNDEE, NY…..The Empire Super Sprints returned to the Black Rock Speedway last Friday night for the Joyce Riesbeck-McCumber Memorial Race on Mt. Dew/Martin Chevrolet night. Randy Years, out of Honeoye Falls, N.Y. picked up his second A-Main of the 2001 season. Steve Paine continues his march to the 358 Modified championship with another feature win. Rich Karlnoski was a first time winner in the PPG Super-Stocks, Steve Brace grabbed the win in the Regional International Pro Trucks. In the NAPA 4 Cyl. Stocks, Kenny Hunt his career win, and Joe Povoski added to his win total. In the Black Rock Bandits, Josh Mills took the win.
America's racecars, the Empire Super Sprints, were at the Black Rock Speedway for their second appearance for the 2001 season, with a contingent of 32 cars. On the opening lap in turn four there was a seven-car tangle. Tim Zimbardi, Ray Preston, Alain Bergeron, George Ely, Tom Taber, and Doug Emery were all involved. Most cars were able to continue. When the green flag came back out, Randy Years took the early lead, and began to pull away. In the early going, Jeff VanDuesen was second followed by Steve Dow, Rick Wilson, and Bubby Kerrick. Lap 2 saw another caution flag as Rob Deitrick popped the fourth turn wall, and folded up the front end on the #10. When racing resumed, Years continued to lead, and was in to lapped traffic by lap eight. At the half-way mark, Years was still on top, with VanDuesen second, Rick Wilson was now third, Steve Dow, and Bubby Kerrick filled out the top five. Wilson worked his way up to second by the 15th circuit, and point leader, Mike Woodring was third. At the checkers it was Randy Years in for his second win of the season, Rick Wilson was second, third was Woodring, Lance Yonge got fourth, and Dan Kaszubinski got fifth. Heats were won by, VanDuesen, Years and Kaszubinski. Rick Wilson won the Dash for Cash, and Tim Zimbardi won the B-Main.
Steve Paine's march to the 358 Championship continued Friday night as he took another win in the Modifieds. Stacy Jackson took the lead at the green flag, but the "Hurricane" was coming, and so was Gil Tegg. On a lap 5 re-start, Bill Demming took the top spot, but Jackson took it back on the following circuit, Paine was now third, and Tegg was fourth. Lap 7 saw Tegg take the lead, with Paine on his back bumper. These two battled hard for the next five laps until Paine took the lead in turn four on lap 12. Paine was able to hold off Tegg for the rest of the way, and took the win. Tegg finished second, third was Bill Demming after a great run, fourth was Bryon Turner, and Stacy Jackson filled up the top five. Gil Tegg, Alex Hoag, and Stacy Jackson won heats.
Dundee, NY's Rich Karlnoski took his first win of the 2001 season in the PPG Super-Stocks as he took the lead on lap 13, and went on for the victory. Early in the event, Chris McCann and Rob Conklin raced hard for the top spot. Conklin got by McCann and began to pull away. But Conklin's bad luck just will not go away, as he suffered a flat tire. This gave the lead back to McCann, with Karlnoski now second and point leader, Dave Fultz third. Karlnoski took the point on lap 13 and went on for the popular win. Chris McCann had a great second place finish, third was Dave Fultz, fourth went to Dale Welty, and Carl Cleveland filled out the top five. Heats were won by, Dave DuBoise, Chris McCann, and Dave Fultz.
Steve Brace is also making a march to the championship. He sits on top of the point standings in the Regional International Pro-Trucks, and he added to that point title with another victory. Brace took the lead at the half way mark after some heavy racing with the Divens family, Don and Ron. Brace and Don Divens raced right down to the checkers, but Ron Divens had to pit as the roof of his truck was coming off! At the line, it was Brace in for the victory, Don Divens second, third was Jim Roberts, fourth was Eddie Machuga, and Fred Buckley filled out the top five. Heats were won by, Ron Divens and Tommy Austin.
In the NAPA 4 Cyl. Stocks, Kenny Hunt took his first career win in the first of two features. He took the lead on lap 9 in turn two, and pulled away for the win. Second was Terry Povoski, third was Donnie Smith, fourth went to Scott Yaw, and Willy Grant Jr., was fifth.
In the second feature, Joe Povoski continues his dominance in this division with another victory. He had a flat tire early, got back on the track with out losing a lap, and charged through the field to take the win. Karl Weichenthal got second, third was, Ray Hyer, fourth was, Jack Ayers, and Mike Hughey was fifth. Heats went to, Ray Hyer, Donnie Smith, Joe Povoski, and Terry Povoski.
Josh Mills took the exciting win in the Black Rock Bandits on a 4 wide pass in turn two on the final lap. He took the win over, Dan Flynn, Jon Wallenbeck, Ray Speicher, and Laverne Knickerbocker III.
