JOHN KARKLIN JR. AND CHARLIE DONK SHARE WINS AT BLACK ROCK
DUNDEE, NY…….John Karklin Jr. Picked up his first win with the Empire Super-Sprints, Charlie Donk took the win in the 358 Modifieds, Dave Fultz got his second win of the year in the PPG Super-Sprints, "Racer" Ron Divens got his first win in the Regional International Pro-Trucks, while in 4 Cyl. Stock racing, a pair of Scotts was victorious, Scott Bradley won the first feature, and Scott Yaw won the second one. Jon Wallenbeck was the winner in the Black Rock Bandits.
The Empire Super Sprints made their first appearance at the Black Rock Speedway for the 2001 season. On this night there was to be a new winner in the club. John Karklin Jr. started the 20 A-Main on the pole position, and took off for the early lead. But the fastest sprinter in the field was on its way in the hands of Bubby Kerrick. He took the lead away from Karklin on lap 12 in turn two, and pulled away from the field. It appeared to be Kerrick's night, but he was in lapped traffic quickly and on the final lap in turns 3 and 4 he lost the handle of the #61 in the heavy traffic. He was able to do a 360-degree spin and kept going, but Karklin re-took the lead and the win. Kerrick took second, third was Dan Kaszubinski, fourth was Don Sharp Jr., and point leader, Mike Woodring filled out the top five. Randy Years, Mike Woodring, and Bubby Kerrick won heats. Kerrick also took the Dash for Cash, and Pete Green won the B-Main.
Usually, if Steve Paine doesn't win the 358 Modified feature, Charlie Donk does, and that was the case on this night at Black Rock. Paine and John Moravec got together in turn three on lap 2, and both drivers had to get to the tail of the field. Although both drivers returned to the feature and had top ten finishes; neither were a factor for the win. Stacey Jackson had the hot hand early in this event, and looked to have the field covered. But Charlie Donk was on a charge up through the field, and with the aid of a couple of caution flags that grouped the field together, he was able to take the lead away from Jackson on lap 20. At the checkers it was Donk in for the victory, Jackson held on for second, third was Bryon Turner, fourth was Alex Hoag, and Gil Tegg Jr. filled out the top five. With this victory, and Paine's 6th place finish, Charlie Donk is the new point leader. Heat wins went to Gil Tegg Jr., Donk, and Todd Henderson.
In the Modified B-Main, Lance Dusett was the winner, the rest of the top six qualifiers were, Don Lawson, Derrick Podsiadlo, Loren Lincoln, Chuck Kennison, and Fran Hilton.
Dave Fultz took his second win of the year in the PPG Super-Stocks. Dave DuBois took the early lead and began to pull away, while Mike Carapella and Dale Welty were racing for second and third. Welty took the lead in turn three on lap seven and looked to be on his way to victory lane. But, yet again, a flat tire on his 1-2-3 dropped him out of the top spot just past the half way mark. Dave Fultz had worked his way up to second by this point, was now the leader. Mike Carapella and Carl Cleveland were racing for second and third. Fultz was able to hold the lead to the checkers, and pull down his second win of the season. Cleveland snuck by Carapella for second, Carapella got third, fourth was Chris Daugherty, and Eddie Mills filled out the top five. Heats were won by, Dale Welty, Fultz and Dave DuBois.
In the Regional International Pro-Trucks, "Racer" Ron Divens was finally able to claim the ever-elusive first win in this division. He has had a frustrating season so far, but everything went his way in this one. Divens was in the top five early in the event, racing with Steve Brace and Bob Buono. At the half way mark, Tom Austin was the leader with Divens in second. These two raced hard for the lead, many times side by side until lap 17 when the Austin 88A had a fire under his mount. He pulled off turn four to the infield where the fire was quickly extinguished. This put Ron Divens in the lead, and he went in for the win. Bob Buono took second, third was Fred Buckley, fourth went to Eddie Machuga, and Matt Balmer filled out the top five. Tom Austin and Fred Buckley were heat winners.
Scott Bradley got his first win of the season in the NAPA 4 Cyl. Stocks in the first of two features. Joe Povoski mounted a late charge but had to settle for second, third was A Jay Potrzebowski, Karl Weichenthal was fourth, and Ray Hyer was fifth. In the second feature for the four bangers, Scott Yaw ran away from the field at the start, but toward the end of the event, Donnie Lawson was catching Yaw. However, it proved to be too little too late, as Yaw took the win, and Lawson had to settle for second. Jack Ayres was third, fourth went to Terry Povoski, and Eddie Crawford was fifth. Heats were won by, Terry Povoski, Scott Bradley, Karl Weichenthal, and Joe Povoski.
Jon Wallenbeck took another win in the Black Rock Bandits as he took the lead on lap 5, and was able to hold off a late charge by second place finisher Steven Ovens. Joe Kurtz was third at the line, fourth went to Adam Austin, and Laverne Knickerbocker III was fifth.
