STEVE PAINE AND DALE WELTY VICTORIOUS AT BLACK ROCK
DUNDEE, N.Y......Steve Paine and Dale Welty began the 2001 season much the same way they ended last season, as they both won feature events in their respective divisions, Paine in the 358 Modifieds, and Welty in the PPG Super-Stocks. Steve Brace took the Sunrise Industries entry to victory lane in the Regional Pro-Trucks, while Joe Povoski, and Jason White were the winners in the NAPA 4 Cyl. Stocks. In the Black Rock Bandits, Joe Kurtz took the win. If opening night is any indication what the rest of the season will bring in the 358's at Black Rock, it looks like Steve Paine is on his way to a 4th consecutive track title. As the green flag dropped for the 25 lap main event, outside polesitter, Tim Sebring grabbed the early lead, but by the 2nd circuit Paine had the Terrell's Potato Chips entry in front of the field, and he stayed there until the checkers flew. This event was marred by several yellow flag periods. One of which saw a pile up in turn one involving Charlie Donk, Stacy Jackson, Derrick Podsiadlo, and Tyke Morris. As the race continued, Paine continued to lead, while a hot battle was shaping up for second between Tim Sebring and John Moravec. These two even tagged each other in turn one on lap 10. Paine dominated the event and went on to score the win. Tim Sebring finished second, third was John Moravec in the Harrington Bros. entry. Fourth was Alex Hoag, and Bill Demming was fifth. John Moravec, and Tim Sebring were heat winners.
In the PPG Super-Stocks it was pretty much business as usual, as track Champion, Dale Welty and his pink and black 1-2-3 scored a relatively easy win. He began the event on the outside of the front row, and the rest, they say, is history. Rich Karlnoski had a strong run, and challenged Welty on a couple of occasions. Dave DuBois had strong run going also, as he was running third, when his #29 backfired and quit on lap 10. Wetly went on to the win, as Karlnoski hung on for second. Third was Quinn Sutherland, fourth was Larry Knowles, and the "Risingville Rocket" Eddie Mills finished fifth in his debut in the Super-Stocks. Heat wins went to Quinn Sutherland, and Dale Welty.
Steve Brace was the winner in the Regional International Pro-Trucks, but it was no cake walk. Brace was challenged early in the event by Don Divens, but by lap 5 Tom Austin was the man chasing the orange #19. These two veteran drivers put on driving seminar for the remainder of the event. On the last lap, coming down to the checkers, Austin's mount slowed, and Fred Buckley took the second position. Austin crawled across the line third, fourth was Don Divens, and Eddie Machuga filled up the top five. Heats were won by the Divens brothers, Ron, and Don.
In the NAPA 4 Cyl. Stocks, Joe Povoski was the winner in the first feature. He was followed across the line by, Jack Ayres, Karl Weichenthal, Donnie Lawson, and Randy Mathews.
In the second feature, Jason White picked up his first ever win in the division, filling out the top five was, Greg Crooker, Fred Mathews, Jake Clancey, and Les Irwin. Heat winners were, Jack Ayres, Scott Yaw, and Joe Povoski.
Joe Kurtz also served notice that he want to retain his track title, as he picked up the win in the Black Rock Bandits. Filling out the top five were, Nathan Daggett, Adam Chilson, Dan Flynn, and Raymond Speicher.
