Bower Opens Brewerton Season With $5,000 Win

BOWER OPENS BREWERTON SEASON WITH $5,000 WIN IN F.X. CAPRARA

CAR COMPANIES DEMON DOG FIGHT ON DIRT

BREWERTON, NY - Defending Brewerton Speedway DIRT Modified Track Champion Chuck Bower started off the 2001 race season in convincing fashion with the win Friday night in the F.X. Caprara Car Companies Demon Dog Fight on DIRT. Bower pocketed $5,000 for the victory in the 15 lap Demon Dog Fight on DIRT. The win for the Lansing, N.Y. driver was a popular one in front of the large opening night crowd.

Bower raced from the outside pole starting position at the start of the 12 lap Demon Dog Fight to take the early lead. The race was slowed after just one lap when Jack Johnson stopped on the track after a chain reaction crash. Johnson was done for the night. On the restart, Bower was now being pressured by Alan Johnson. A.J. moved up fast from the fifth starting position.

The race quickly became a three car battle for the lead with Danny Johnson joining Bower and Alan Johnson. The race was slowed for the second and final time on lap six when Scott Prentice and Chuck Hebing came together on the track. Bower was challenged by both Johnson s on the restart, but in the late going the race for the $5,000 top prize was between Bower and Alan Johnson.

In the final stages of the race Bower held off Johnson for the win in the richest race ever staged in DIRT Motorsports Modified history, over the shortest distance. The win for the Currier Plastics DIRT Modified team was worth $5,000. Alan Johnson had to settle for second with Danny Johnson following in third. Billy Decker and Jim Gabriel completed the top five in the Demon Dog Fight on DIRT.

Pat Ward, Jimmy Phelps, Tim McCreadie, Chuck Hebing, Bob McCreadie, Scott Prentice and Jack Johnson completed the finishing order in the first ever Demon Dog Fight on DIRT. Decker set fast time in the time trial session. Alan Johnson and Prentice won the qualifying heat races. Ward claimed the win in the B main.

Sean Lias started off the 2001 IMCA Modified season at Brewerton with the opening night feature win. Lias was followed across the line by Bob Bradt, Tony Finch, John Hill and Bill Anderson Sr. Lias led the entire 20 lap distance. Rob Keller and Lias won the IMCA Modified heat races.

Tony Buffa claimed the opening night Brewerton feature win in the Dwarf Car division. Buffa won out over Barry Virts, Ken Gamlen, Todd Simons and Darren Forbes. Buffa led the entire 20 lap feature. Dennis Johnson, Buffa and Virts were the winners of the Dwarf Car qualifying heat races.

Brian Evenden earned the Brewerton opening night win in the Four Cylinder Stock class. Evenden was chased across the finish line by Rick Angle, Harvey Calkins Jr., Chris Bargabos and Dave Myrto. Angle led the first five feature laps. Chuck Powelczyk took over on lap six and led through lap 10 when he pulled into the infield. Evenden took over on lap 11 and led the rest of the way. Powelczyk and Angle were heat race winners.
