PAINE, WELTY, EXCELL, POTTER, CLANCEY, AND GRANT WIN AT BLACK ROCK
Press release by Don Dunham P.R. Director
DUNDEE, N.Y………. ”The Hurricane”, Steve Paine picked up where he left off in 1999 at the Black Rock Speedway and grabbed his first Modified win of the season last Friday night at the Black Rock Speedway on Signs Plus, and Hanson Aggregates night. Dale Welty continues his winning ways in the PPG Super-Stocks, while Derek Excell took the exciting win in the Regional Pro-Trucks. In 4 Cyl. Stock Racing, Don Potter and Jake Clancey were victorious, and Willie Grant Jr. won the Black Rock Bandits feature.
Steve Paine is the defending track Champion in the 358 Modified division at Black Rock, and if his performance last Friday night was any indication of how the year 2000 is going to be, the rest of the competitors are in real trouble. Although Paine started on the pole, for probably the last time of the year, he took off at the drop of the green, and ran away and hid from the rest of the field. There was however a spirited battle for second, on back, between Tim Sebring, Tim Burnett, and Bryon Turner. Later in the event, perennial bridesmaid, Charlie Donk made his presence known, as he wheeled his 99 into second place, but he was not to catch Paine on that night. At the checkers it was a familiar sight, with Paine taking the win, and Donk finishing second. Third was Tim Sebring, Walt Mitchell was fourth, and Bryon Turner filled out the top five. Heats were won by Paine, Matt Shepard, and Tim Burnett. Rich Swarthout was the winner in the Modified B-Main.
Dale Welty continued his winning ways in the PPG Super-Stocks, as he put his 19-year old Spencer’s Big M #1-2-3 in victory lane for the second time in as many tries in the year 2000. He took the lead on a lap 9 re-start, and began to pull away from the rest of the field. Racing for second through fifth was exciting as Mike Carapella, Jim Schuyler, and Quinn Sutherland were dicing for position. Welty was able to hold off all challenges for his second win of the year. He was followed across the line by, Mike Carapella, Quinn Sutherland, Jim Schuyler and Kevin Chilson. Heats were won by, Dave Machuga and Welty.
In the all new, and very competitive, Regional Pro-Truck division, Derek Excell, out of Geneva, N.Y. , took the most exciting win of the night. He led the first half of the race, and looked like he was going to run away from everyone. But several cautions kept the field close together. In fact at one point he got shuffled back to third. On the last lap, the “Wild Thing” Jeff Smith was in the lead, but Excell was up to second, and looking for more. As the highflying duo hit the fourth turn they were side-by-side and trading paint. As the checkers flew it was Excell by a couple of feet for the win. Jeff Smith had to settle for second, third was Les Smith, fourth went to Tommy Austin, and Dan Mathews filled up the top five. Heats were won by Excell and Ralph Warren.
In 4 Cyl. Stock racing action, Don Potter was the winner in the first feature, as he took the win over Willie Grant, Greg Crooker, Fred Mathews, and Jack Ayers. In the second feature, Jake Clancey took the victory; he was followed by, Eddie Mills, Karl Weichenthal, Ray Hyer, and Kevin Parsons.
The exciting Black Rock bandit feature was taken by Willie Grant Jr. after a spirited battle with second place finisher, Kenny Peoples Jr., Josh Mills was third, fourth was Joe Kurtz, and filling up the top five was Trevor Bentley.
