BRYON TURNER PICKS UP FIRST MODIFIED WIN
AT BLACK ROCK
Press Release by Don Dunham P.R. Director
DUNDEE N.Y. ……Bryon Turner out of Victor, N.Y. picked up his first ever Modified win last Friday night at the Black Rock Speedway on Robinson Lumber night. Dale Welty made it three in row in the PPG Super-Stock division. In the Regional Pro-Trucks, Billy Wilson picked up his first win, while Ray Hyer grabbed the win in the Putman Auto Sales 25 lap event for the 4 Cyl. Stocks, and Jimmy Grant was the Black Rock Bandit winner.
After several years in trying, and finishing second in many races, Bryon Turner finally stood in victory lane after the 358 Modified event last Friday night at the Black Rock Speedway, although he was not the first across the line at the checkers. Turner took the lead on the third lap in turn four, and he had Tim Sebring’s District 45 Teo Pro car right on his rear crash rail. Three laps later, Sebring got by Turner to take over the top spot, while the “Hurricane” Steve Paine was already in the third position. At this time John Moravec was fourth, and Charlie Donk filled up the top five. Sebring and Turner were having a great race for the lead, but Moravec and Paine were not too far away. Paine and Moravec were now racing for second and third. By lap 20 Turner was starting to get in to some heavy traffic, and this allowed Paine to close up ground on the leader. On lap 24 in turn two Paine got under Turner and took over the lead, and was the apparent winner at the flag, with Turner the bridesmaid once again. However, the officials noted that Paine had driven over the cement “turtles” that lines the inside of the turns. A procedure rule at Black Rock reads that if a driver drives over one of these turtles to advance position, they will be penalized two spots for every one spot gained. Paine was dropped to third. The win was given to Turner, once again Charlie Donk finished second, Paine was third, Tim Sebring got fourth, and rookie Alex Hoag filled out the top five.
Dale Welty, out of Spencer, N.Y. , continues his winning ways in the PPG Super-Stock division, as he picked up his third win in as many races. The 19 year old race car continues to perform flawlessly, as the rest of the field continues to chase the pink and black 1-2-3. Dundee’s Rich Karlnoski grabbed the early lead, and he had veteran Dave Machuga in tow. It was not long before Welty had worked his way to the front from the 13th starting spot, and he was in the lead by lap 7, and the rest, they say is history. Welty went on to take his third win of the season, and remain undefeated. Kevin Chilson was second, third was Quinn Sutherland, Dave Machuga was fourth, and Cam Sutherland rounded out the top five. Heats were won by Machuga and Welty.
The all new Regional Pro-Trucks continue to impress everyone, as the racing is close every week. There have also been three different winners in as many races. The “Towlesville, Twister” Billy Wilson picked up his first win in this division. He took the lead from Ron Divens on lap 14, and managed to hold off a fast closing Steve Brace in the Sunrise Express. Finishing third was Tommy Austin, Ron Divens was fourth, and Bry Weiskoff filled out the top five. Heats were won by Ron Divens and Tommy Austin.
In 4 Cyl. Stock racing, Ray Hyer was the winner in the big 25 lap Putman Auto Sales feature event. He and Jack Ayers had a race long battle for the lead, that saw them swap the lead back and forth many times. At the checkers it was Ray Hyer with the win, Jack Ayers was second, third went to Willie Grant, fourth was Doug Barton, and Jake Clancey rounded out the top five. Heats were won by Ayers, Phil Yaw, and Jake Clancey.
Jimmy Grant was the winner in the Black Rock Bandits. Josh Mills was second, third went to, Joe Kurtz, fourth was Willie Grant Jr., and Nathan Daggett was fifth.
Adam Hines was this week’s winner in the Junior Flagger competition.
