JAMIE SHEA IS "KING OF THE CAN" AT PENN CAN

(Susquehanna, Pa.) Lenox, Pa. Modified rookie Jamie Shea picked a good

night to score his first career Modified feature win as he drove to

victory in the 50 lap Don's Automotive Mall-Gary's U-Pull It-BPG Racing

"King of the Can" Allen Coy drove to his first win of the season in

the Late Model "Topless 25" while Shane Wolf put an exclamation point on

his championship season with his victory in the B & D Exhaust sponsored

:King of the Can" Pure Stock Challenge event.

The 50 lap King of the Can event saw Jamie Shea and Chris Weaver

pace the field to the green flag as the line-up was determined visa a

blind draw prior to the event. Shea and Weaver spent the early laps of

the feature battling for the top spot while Jeff Strunk was on the move

ad he advanced from his fourth starting position. Shea, Chris Weaver,

and Strunk spent many laps battling for the top spot with Strunk finally

working into the top spot on the 19th lap.

In the early stages of the event, the man on the move was three

time defending track champion Brian Weaver. Weaver got into the feature

as a guaranteed starter after problems in his heat race forced Weaver to

rely on his guaranteed starter status to make the starting field.

Brian's drive through the field was helped considerable by a series of

cautions between laps ten and twenty. This kept the field bunched up,

allowing Weaver to steadily drive his way into contention. By the time

the crossed flags were shown, Weaver was racing just outside the top five

running order.

A long green flag run over the second half of the event saw Weaver

drive his way into a contending position behind Strunk as he worked past

his brother for third. With laps winding down a caution flag with ten

lap remaining bunched the field again. Weaver took advantage of this

restart to work past Shea and set his sights on race leader Strunk.

Weaver quickly ran Strunk down and was applying heavy pressure to Strunk

as the laps wound down and the two veteran drivers put on a show for the

Penn Can fans as they battled for the top spot.

The entire complexion of the race changed just after the two

contenders for the victory took the white flag. Racing into the first

turn, contact between Weaver and Strunk saw Strunk spinning out of the

lead while Weaver continued on. Before speedway officials could make a

ruling as to any possible penalties resulting from the contact, Strunk

took matters into his own hands and twice rammed Weaver while the field

circulated under the caution flag. This contact disabled Weaver's car,

eliminating him from the event while Strunk was sent pitside by track

officials for his actions in initiating intentional contact with another

car under the caution flag period.

With Strunk and Weaver both out of the event, Strunk's BPG Racing

teammate Jamie Shea inherited the lead with only one lap remaining.

Jamie ran off the final lap of the event to pick up his first career

Modified victory and the $5,000 payday for winning the biggest race of

the season at Penn Can. Chris Weaver tried to mount a challenge for the

win over the final lap, but Shea was able to hold off Weaver's challenge

to pick up the win. Chris Weaver crossed the line second while Mike

Colsten finished a solid third. Mike Decker and Russell Hendrickson Jr.

rounded out the top five. Lake Moc-A-Tek Speedway regular Alan Kellogg

finished sixth ahead of Mike Clapperton, Bob Savoie, Jeff Rudalavage, and

Tom Rudalavage.

The 45 Modifieds in the pits for the King of the Can race took part

in five heat races with Mike Clapperton, Alan Kellogg, Jamie Shea, Chris

Weaver, and Alan Rudalavage winning the heat races. Bob Trapper and Dana

Wagner won the twin consolation events.

The "Topless 25" for the Late Model division saw 2002 Penn Can

Speedway champion Allen Coy pick up his first feature win of the 2003

season. Coy drove around the outside of Joe Damiano on lap 20 of the 25

lap event to take over the top spot. Once out front, Coy was able to

drive away from Damiano to pick up the win by a comfortable margin.

Damiano picked up a solid runner-up finish while newly crowned track

champion Dave Zona finished third. Keith Mudge and Rick King rounded out

the top five. Pete Sobol, Jim O'Hara, Bud Phillips, Tom Lainhart, and

Steve Tourje rounded out the top ten finishers.

Jason Carman and Keith Mudge won the Late Model qualifiers.

Shane Wolf put an exclamation point on his championship season as he

drove to victory in the 20 lap B & D Exhaust Pure Stock challenge event.

Wolf held off a determined challenge from Buck Mills, who pressured Wolf

all the way but could not find a way past the newly crowned track

champion. Mills settled for second at the finish ahead of Daryl Ellis,

Keith Wilkins, and Michael Lartz. Kevin Davies, Dan Donnelly Jr., Jeremy

Shaw, Dee Ramey, and Bob Boynton completed the top ten.

During the running of the Pure Stock feature, Rich Green suffered an

apparent back injury after making heavy contact with another car. An

extended red flag was necessary as crews removed the roof of the car in

order to extricate the driver. Rich was conscious and talking with

rescue crews when taken from the car. He was transported to Barnes

Kasson Hospital in Susquehanna for further evaluation. No further info

was available as of press time.

Shane Wolf, Daryl Ellis, and Michael Lartz won the Pure Stock

qualifiers.

With the running of the King of the Can, the racing season is now

complete at Penn Can. The final event on the schedule for 2003 will be

the annual awards banquet. Details on the banquet will be released soon

in this publication.
