MCGURRIN CAPTURES KINGS ROYAL MODIFIED SPECIAL AT THUNDER MOUNTAIN!

Lisle, NY... Tom McGurrin, of Newton Lake, took home the lion's share

Saturday night as he bested a tough field of Modified competitors by

picking up the win in the King's Royal 50 lap event. Other winners on the

card were Candor's Brian White in Sportsman, Vestal's Larry Hillis in

Super Stocks, Willett's Buck Mills in Pure Stocks, and Chuck WHeeland, Jr.,

of Newark Valley, in the Thunder Dogs.

Twenty Five Modifieds made the call to start the 50 lap Feature Event.

By virtue of a top twelve re-draw, Jeff Bronson and Powerful Paul Jensen

led the field to the drop of the green. By lap three, Conklin's Brian

Weaver rallied up from his fourth starting position to grad the lead away

from Bronson.

'Fast" Eddie White, of Candor, slid past Brosnon on lap six and tried

to catch the Decker Logging 9r of Weaver, as Jensen moved pat Bronson into

third. Tom McGurrin seemed to have the car set up well on the high side, as

he powered by Jensen after a lap 15 re-start, and then White on the next lap

to take over second.

McGurrin chased down Weaver, and the two battled inside and out for

several laps until McGurrin took over the top spot on lap 29. After that

it was all McGurrin as he opened up a commanding lead and went on to pick

up the win and the $5000 top prize. Weaver came in for second, followed by

Jensen, of Edmeston, Rick Wilk, of Cortland, and Susquehanna native Mike

Decker for fifth.

Bainbridge's Rodney Hart led the early way in the 20 lap Sportsman

Main Event after grabbing the lead from his outside pole starting spot.

Binghamton's Ken Titus put the pressure on as he ran in second. Titus

made his way by to capture the lead coming out of turn two. As the field

entered turn three, Hart tangled with a Yuke tire, and collected 3rd and

4th place runners Billy Spoonhower and Chad Cook.

Brian White took over the top spot from Titus as the green flag fell,

and then never looked back as he held off the hard charges of Titus on his

way to picking up the victory. Titus settled for a solid second. Cook, of

Deposit, made his way back through the pack to finish third, while Deposit's

Shawn Mills and Dusty Jagger, of Port Crane, completed the top five.

Vestal's Larry Hillis had a dominating performance in the 20 lap

Super Stock feature go, as he lead wire to wire to pick up the win. J.T.

McKernan, of Monroeton, PA, tried a few time to make a move on Hillis for

the lead, but was unable to mount a serious challenge.

Hillis came in for the victory with McKernan running second,

Cortland's Chris Stull in third, Dan Pompey, of Glenwood, PA for fourth,

and Ed McKernan, also of Monroeton, for fifth.

Buck Mills, of Willett, showed why he is the 2003 Thunder Mountain

track points champion as he took the lead at the start of the 20 lap Main

Event from his third starting position and lead start to finish.

Despite some heavy competition dicing for position behind him, including

Jim Cornell Jr, Dick Stark, Mike Wilbur and Rich Green, Mills was able to

hold on for the win.

Wilbur, of Spencer came home in second, with Cortland's Howard Jones,

Endicott's Rich Green, and Marathon's Dan Searles completing the top five.

Chuck Wheeland, Jr., of Newark Valley, started the season as a Four

Cylinder Stock, but recently converted his ride to compete in the new

Thunder Dog class. The switch proved to be a good move as Wheeland grabbed

the early lead in the 12 lap Main event.

Whitney Point's Jeff Wilcox had other thoughts, as he took over the

number one spot on the fifth lap, shuffling Wheeland back to second. As

Wilcox was coming around the receive the 'two to go' flags, his number 10

machine went up in smoke. Wheeland inherited the lead back, and then

held off multi feature winner Tim Parker, of McGraw, to pick up his first

Thunder Dog feature win.

Berkshire native Amber Patrick ran her Thunder Pup machine with the

Dog's and finished an impressive third plave, as Berkshire's Paul Larow and

Cortland's Ben Poirier completed the top five.

Well, the racing season is over for the Thunder Mountain Speedway,

but the real work has just begun, as promoter Karl Spoonhower made the

announcement that the track will be expanding it's size during the off-

season. Be sure to stay tuned for more details to come.
