DANNY MASSEY, MIKE FROST, AND RICK WHITNEY WIN AT PENN CAN BEFORE THE RAINS COME
Friday night's racing card at the Penn Can Speedway took place under
cloudy skies with a persistent drizzle falling periodically throughout
most of the racing program. Despite the rains, three drivers were able
to pick up their first wins of the season at Penn Can. The United Racing
Club Sprint Cars made their annual Penn Can appearance with 18 year old
Danny Massey picking up the feature win. Mike Frost won his first career
Modified feature in a rain shortened event while Rick Whitney won his
first Sportsman feature of the season. The continuing rains made it
impossible for the Pure Stocks to complete their feature, so they will be
making up this feature at the beginning of next Friday nights' racing
card.
The URC Sprint cars made their annual Penn Can Speedway appearance
on Friday night with Danny Massey picking up the feature event win in the
rain shortened event. Pete Green jumped out to an early lead and led the
first four laps before slipping high in the fourth turn, opening the door
for Massey, who drove past Green to take over the lead that he would
never relinquish. Green chased Massey throughout the event but could
never get close enough to mount a real challenge for the top spot.
Green's strong run would end on lap twenty when he tangled with a lapped
car and spun out. During this caution a light mist again began to fall
and URC officials chose not to complete the feature, waving the checkered
flag on lap 20.
Massey was declared the winner of the aborted event with Curt
Michael finishing second ahead of Doug Emery, Tevor Lewis, and Pete
Welsh. Chris Coyle, Ed Aikin, Matt Gerber, Dave McGough, and George
Suprick completed the top ten.
The only red flag of the event came on lap 13 when Tim Houge flipped
his mount in turn three. Tim was not injured in the crash.
After the shortened URC Sprint event, the Modifieds took to the
track for their 30 lap feature. Modified rookie Daryl Ellis and Shawn
Collins paced the field to the green flag to start the Modified feature.
Eventual winner Mike Frost made a bold move from his fourth starting
position to drive past both Ellis and Collins to take over the lead. As
the race wore on, Frost continued to lead the event, holding off strong
challenges from George Kostelansky and Chris Shupp for the top spot. As
this battle heated up at the front of the field, weather conditions were
rapidly deteriorating as the rain was picking up in intensity. Just
after the field took the halfway sign, a caution flag was displayed for a
spin. During this caution the rains began to fall in earnest, forcing
Speedway officials to declare the race official and wave the checkered
flag. Frost collected his first career feature win after several years
of trying aboard his Serenity Falls sponsored #30+. Kosteansky finished
second ahead of Shupp, Alan Rudalavage, and Brian Weaver. Sixth through
tenth were Steve Babicek, Jeff Strunk, Tom McGurrin, Bill Huff, and Sean
Collins. For the fourth time in five races, Bill Huff collected the
bonus money for being the highest finishing DIRT legal 358 Modified.
Steve Babicek, Mike Frost, and Brian Weaver wee Modified heat race
winners.
In the Sportsman division, Rick Whitney drove his Whitney Stone
sponsored #114 to his first feature win of the 2003 season. Whitney
started the feature in sixth but made his way quickly to the front of the
field, taking the top spot from Brian Decker after some tight racing that
saw the two run several laps side by side before Whitney was able to
complete the pass on Decker to take over the lead for good. Decker
chased Whitney the rest of the way but could not find a way past, setting
for a strong runner-up finish. Chad Cook drove from twelfth starting
position to finish third ahead of teenage sensation Kevin Bates and
second year Sportsman driver Mike Loney. Bob Lane, Brett Tonkin, Shawn
Mills, Bruce Evans Jr., and Ted Stout completed the top ten.
Dwayne Robbins, Rick Whitney, and Shawn Mills were Sportsman heat
race winners.
The Pure Stock feature was not run due to the rain and will be the
first race on this Friday night's card..
This Friday night finds all five of Penn Can Speedway's regular
divisions in action as the Modifieds, Sportsman, Late Models, Super
Stocks, and Pure Stocks will all see action in a full slate of qualifying
events leading up to five big feature races. Racing action gets underway
at 7:15 PM. The Penn Can Speedway is located in Susquehanna, Pa. about
seven miles South of Binghamton, NY. Penn Can Speedway is located on
Pennsylvania Rte 171, about 7 miles East of Exit #230 off I-81.
