BRIAN WEAVER, DAVE LEYSHON, JAMIE GRIFFITHS, JAMES CORNELL AND MICHAEL

LARTZ ARE FEATURE WINNERS AT PENN CAN

After getting off to a slow start in 2003, defending

Penn Can Speedway Modified Champion Brian Weaver scored his first win of

the 2003 campaign on Wholesale Mulch and Sawdust night at the Penn Can

Speedway as he piloted his familiar Decker Logging 9R to victory. Dave

Leyshon picked up his first ever feature win in the 20 lap Sportsman main

event while opening night winner Jamie Griffith won his second Late Model

feature of the season. James Cornell started dead last in the 20 lap

Super Stock feature, but he passed everyone in front of him to take his

third win of the season. Michael Lartz won the Pure Stock feature by an

estimated six inches over Brian Decker in the closest finish at the

speedway in a couple of years.

Weaver's handling problems allowed previous week's winner Jeff

Strunk to move into a contending position late in the 30 lap feature.

The pilot of the Chad Sinon Motorsports/BPG Racing #88 moved past Bill

Huff on a lap 25 restart to move into second and reel in Weaver to make a

strong challenge for the top spot. As they charged off the fourth turn

on the final lap, Strunk was able to get to the low side of Weaver and

pull alongside to bring the fans to their feet in anticipation of an

exciting finish. Weaver, who was running the outside groove, took

advantage of his momentum around the top side of the speedway to just nip

Strunk at the line by about a car length in an exciting climax to the

featur event. Strunk's second place finish was his fourth straight top

three finish. Bill Huff finished third and collected $200 as his bonus

for being the top finishing car powered by a DIRT legal 258 C.I. motor.

George Kostelansky finished fourth while longtime veteran Dave Jenkins

utilized his years of experience to wind up with a solid fifth place

finish. Jeff Bronson, Mike Nagel, Tom McGurrin, Alan Rudalavage, and

Mike Clapperton completed the top ten at the finish.
