WEAVER TOPS PENN CAN MODIFIED FIELD

(Susquehanna, Pa.) Brian Weaver picked up his second Modified feature

win of the 2002 season, his first since opening night, last Friday night at

the Penn Can Speedway. Gary Gallerie won his second Can Sportsman

feature while Allen Coy picked up his fourth Late Model victory. Tracy

Gregory won his first Super Stock feature in a rain delayed race from

May17th, while Jamie Shea won his second of the year in the regularly

scheduled feature. Everett Cass won his first career Pure Stock

feature.

After struggling with mechanical problems the last few weeks, Brian

Weaver started the Modified feature from the third starting position.

Brian wasted little time in going to the front as Brian worked past his

brother Chris and Jim Crawn to lead the first lap of the feature. In

fact, Weaver would lead all the way aboard his Randy Decker owned Decker

Logging #9R to take the win, ending Mike Colsten's four race winning

streak.

While Weaver was dominating the event out front, the battle for the

runner-up position was a hotly contested race with second through sixth

place involved in the battle. Tose four spots changed hands almost

every lap with some good entertaining racing taking place. At the finish it

was Burch Tittle winning the battle to bring his "Z" car home second

with Rich Virkitis third. Mike Colsten charged from 16th starting spot to

fourth at the finish with Alan Rudalavage rounding out the top five.

Mike Nagel, Alan Shiffler, Chris Shupp, Mike Decker and George

Kostelansky completed the top ten.

Brian Weaver, Tom McGurrin, and Butch Tittle were Modified heat

racewinners.

In the Sportsman division it was Gary Gallerie picking up his

Second win of the 2002 season aboard his Indian Motorcycles of Scranton

sponsored #79. Much as Weaver did in the Modifieds, Gallerie grabbed

the lead early and never looked back as he charged to a convincing victory.

Craig Terrell finished a distant second with Bob Lane, Rick Whitney, and

Mike Loney completing the top five. It was an impressive run for Loney,

who was making his first ever Sportsman start at Penn Can. Brian

Decker, Jim O'Hara, Dave Leyshon, Dan Vauter, and newcomer Joey Tinnes completed

the top ten.

Heat races were won by Tom McGurrin, Brian Decker, and Mike Loney.

So far this season, Allen Coy has been dominant in Southern Tier

Late Model racing, and he continued his winning wats on Friday night,

collecting his fourth win of the season aboard his Snake Creek

Marine/Cooley Stone #53. A lap six restart would prove to be the

Turning point of the race as Coy made his winning pass, an outside sweep around

race leader Jmie Griffiths. Griffiths chased Coy the rest of the way,

but Could not make a run back at Allen and settled for a strong

runner-up finish. Dave Zona, Joe Damiano, and rookie Steve Tourje completed the

top five. Another rookie, Brett Dyer, crossed the line sixth ahead of

Daryl Ellis, Dave Silvernail, Carl Silvernail, and Rich King.

Jim O'Hara and Joe Damiano won Late Model preliminary events.

The first event of the night was the Super Stock feature that was

rained out back on May 17th. That event saw Tracy Gregory pick up his

first win of the 2002 season. Gregory grabbed the lead early then

fought off a challenge from Brett Spoor to pick up the win. Spoor finished

second while Jamie Shea raced his way from the rear of the pack to

finish third. Joe Cabets and Mike Mills were fourth and fifth respectively.

Paul Rooney, Earl Zimmer, Randy Metcalf, Dwayne Robbins, and Craig

Trella made up the second half of the top ten.

The regularly scheduled feature saw Jamie Shea pick up his second

win of the season as he powered his PS Transportation/Lenox Propane

sponsored #J1 to a hard earned victory. Shea had to work for the win as

he came from ninth starting position, passing Chris Piasecki for the

lead after the two battled for several laps. Even after Shea took the lead

he was not able to get away from Piasecki, who challenged Shea all the way

to the finish before settling for second place ahead of Tracy Gregory.

Paul Rooney crossed the line fourth but was disqualified when he failed

to pass muster in the post race inspection. This gave fourth place to

Brett Spoor with Mike Mills fifth. Randy Metcalf, Joe Cabets, Craig

Trella, Dwayne Robbins, and Tom Herman were sixth through tenth

respectively.

The busy night or racing action finished up with the 15 lap Pure

Stock feature. This feature saw a new face in victory lane as Everett

Cass won his first career Pure Stock feature. Everett started on pole

and led every lap of the feature to pick up the win. Two time winner

already this season Toby Sparks made a late run at Cass, but Everett had

his #5 hooked up in the outside groove and Sparks was unable to get past

Cass. Ken finished second with Michael Lartz, Brett Selch, and Keith

Wilkins making up the rest of the top five. Nate Evans, Tom Garren, Rob

Welch, Billy House and Rob Sterling made up the second half of the top

ten.

Toby Sparks and Daryl Ellis won Pure Stock qualifying events.

The first major mid-week special event of the 2002 season at

Penn Can is scheduled for Tuesday, June 18th. On the card that evening

is the first of three appearances of the Don's Automotive Mall North

South Shootout Series for the Super Stocks. Gary Roberts won the

Opening race of the series last Sunday at Thunder Mountain, but will face plenty

of stiff competition from the Penn Can regulars. Defending Penn Can

Speedway Champion Jamie Shea, current point leader Chris Piasecki, Brett

Spoor, and Paul Rooney are but a few of the Penn Can regulars set to

defend their home turf against the expected strong field of invaders

coming in for this show. Also on the card on this evening will be the

B & D Exhaust Warehouse Shootout for the Pure Stocks. The Four Cylinder

Stocks will round out the card, making their first of three scheduled

appearances at Penn Can.

The Independence Day Weekend will feature two nights of racing at

Penn Can. The weekend kicks off on Thursday, July 4th with one of most

eagerly anticipated events of the season, the first Penn Can race on the

Gary's U-Pull It King's Royal Modified Series. This six race series

contested between Penn Can and Thunder Mountain has generated a great

deal of interest, with the possibility of several high profile Modified

teams joining the Southern Tier regulars for at least some of the shows.

The Super Stocks, Pure Stocks, and Four Cylinder Stocks will round out

the on track racing action, and a huge fireworks display will also be

presented on what promises to be a very special night of racing.

The Holiday festivities continue on Friday, July 5th when the

Sportsman and Late Model teams take to the track with each competing in

special events. The Mini Sprints will also be making a rare Penn Can

appearance on this night. A huge Demolition Derby will round out the

evening's activities, the first Demolition Derby at Penn Can in nearly

20 years. The Enduro race originally slated for July 5th has been

cancelled.
