MIKE COLSTEN, CRAIG TERRELL, KEITH MUDGE, CHRIS PIASEKI, AND NATE EVANS
FRIDAY NIGHT WINNERS AT PENN CAN
(Susquehanna, Pa.) Mike Colsten picked up his first Penn Can
feature win of the season last Friday night as he powered his Don's Automotive
Mall sponsored entry to victory on Barnes Kasson Hospital night at the
speedway. Craig Terrell picked up his second feature win of the season
in the Sportsman ranks as did Chris Piasecki in the Super Stocks. Keith
Mudge earned his first Penn Can triumph in the Late Model feature while
Nate Evans won his second Pure Stock feature of the season.
For Colsten, his first win of the 2002 season came in dominating
fashion. Mike wasted little time in taking control of the feature as he
blasted from his sixth starting position to grab the lead on the first
lap of the race. The first half of the feature went without a caution
flag, allowing Mike to open up a big lead on the rest of the field. The
first caution of the race came well past the halfway point when
defending track champion Brian Weaver broke while running fourth.
Colsten enjoyed a cushion as the race restarted with several lapped
cars between himself and second place Bob Hamm. Chris Schupp was the
man on the move as he blasted past Hamm for second on the restart and set
off to try to close on Colsten. Schupp was able to narrow the gap to one
lapped car between himself and Colsten when the final caution flag of
the race appeared for Rich Keehle's spin in the second turn. This set up a
two laps dash to the finish. Unfortunately for Schupp, the one
remaining lapped car between himself and leader Colsten would prove tough to pass
as it took Chris more than a lap to get by the lapped car. This allowed
Colsten to open up enough of a lead that he was able to sprint home for
the win basically unchallenged. Schupp matched his best career Penn Can
finish as he came home second behind Colsten. Bob Hamm, Rick Virkitis,
and George Kostelansky completed the top five. Mike Decker, Butch
Tittle, Tom McGurrin, Sean Collins, and Carl Nagel completed the top
ten.
Bob Hamm, Sean Collins, and Mike Colsten were Modified heat race
winners.
The 20 lap Sportsman feature saw Craig Terrell drive his Klinger's
Kawasaki sponsored #78 to his second victory of the season. Klinger
appeared to be in control of the feature the majority of the race, but
Tom McGurrin made a furious last lap charge, nearly pulling off a
dramatic last lap pass. McGurrin's bid for victory would fall just
short as Tom had to settle for a strong second place run behind Terrell by
less than a car length.. Dan Vauter finished third ahead of Rick Holgate
while Rick Whitney finished fifth after starting at the rear of the
field. Bob Lane, Brian Decker, Kevin Timinski, Ted Stout and Brett
Tonkin completed the top ten.
Tom McGurrin and Rick Holgate were heat race winners.
Keith Mudge picked up his first career Penn Can victory in the Late
Model feature. Mudge has been trying to win at Penn Can for six seasons
and finally scored that elusive first win as he drove his Tedeshi's
Pizza sponsored #35 to victory. Mudge started fourth on the field and was
never out of the top five as Joe Damiano and Steve Tourje led the early
laps of the feature. Several caution flags slowed the pace of the
feature, the most serious coming when Tourje got crossed up at the head
of the field, collecting defending track champion Allen Coy and Randall
Paxton. As the race wound down Mudge had opened up a bit of a lead as
Dave Zona and Jamie Griffith were locked in a battle for the runner-up
position. This allowed Mudge to run uncontested to a popular win ahead
of Zona, who beat out Griffith for the runner-up spot. Jim Sherman
recovered from an early race incident to finish fourth while Rich King
rounded out the top five finishing order. Randy Metcalf, Dave
Silvernail, Jason Carmen, Lou Sparks, and Daryl Ellis finished sixth
through tenth respectively.
Randall Paxton and Allen Coy won Late Model qualifiers.
The Super Stock feature saw two familiar combatants lock in a
Battle for victory as Chris Piasecki barely edged out Jamie Shea. Last season
these two fought tooth and nail for the Super Stock championship, a back
and forth battle that saw Shea narrowly win the title over Piasecki on
the last night of the season. On Friday night, the two battled once
again, this time for the feature win. The early part of the feature
belonged to Tracy Gregory as he had things going his way, opening up a
big lead before his drive was derailed by a flat tire, forcing him to
the pits and turning the lead over to Piasecki. The battle between Piasecki
and Shea saw Shea repeatedly look underneath Piasecki, but Chris was
able to keep the door closed and Shea was not able to find a way past.
Piasecki recorded his second consecutive win over Shea, Paul Rooney,
Dwayne Robbins, and Rod Latwinski. Brett Spoor, Dick Vauter, Randy
Metcalf, Chris Hunsinger and Tracy Gregory finished in positions six
through ten respectively. Tracy Gregory and Dwayne Robbins were
victorious in Super Stock preliminary action.
Nate Evans won his second Pure Stock feature of the season. Evans
had to fight off several challengers as Michael Lartz, Everett Cass, and
John Cooper all took their best shots at Evans. Nate was up to the
challenge as he was able to hold off all three to score his second win
of the season. Everett Cass came home a career best second with opening
night winner John Cooper finishing third. Keith Wilkins and last week's
winner Daryl Evans made up the remainder of the top five. Rookie Gary
Druhl was sixth trailed by Rod Sterling. Michael Lartz recovered from a
flat tire to finish eighth with Randy Teets ninth and Dave Albrecht
tenth. Rob Welch and Michael Lartz won Pure Stock heat races.
Racing continues this Friday night at Penn Can when the Mighty
Modifieds, Sportsman, Late Models, Super Stocks, and Pure Stocks will
make up a five star night of racing action. The racing gets underway at
7:15PM.
