SPECTACULAR PENN CAN VICTORIES FOR BUTCH TITTLE, ALLEN COY, JAMIE SHEA, AND BOBBY BOYNTON
(Susquehanna, Pa.) The Pump 'n Pantry Penn Can Spectacular last Friday night found Sylorsbrg, Pa.'s Butch Tittle pickig up the victory in the Modified portion of the Spectacular, his second win of the 2001 season. Allen Coy earned the 2001 Late Model track championship in style as he drove to his sixth feature win of the season, while Jamie Shea earned his ninth win of the season to secure the Super Stock championship. Bobby Boynton won his first even Penn Can Pure Stock feature.
The 50 lap Modified spectacular saw polesetter Chris Weaver jump to the lead and set the pace for the opening circuits trailed by Chris Schupp. As these two battled for the top spot, eventual winner Tittle and Brian Weaver were on their way to the front after starting 16th and 12th respectively. By lap ten, Brian Weaver had assumed command of the event as he drove around the outside of his brother to take over the top spot. A few lap late, Tittle also moved past Chris Weaver to take over the second spot. A series of mid-race cautions set up an entertaining battle for the top spot as Tittle and Weaver swapped the top spot back and forth. The two spent several laps battling side by side for the top spot as each driver led some laps by a scant margin. Weaver was ultimately able to take the top spot from Tittle and bean to open up a bit of a lead. Weaver's strong run came to an end on the 44th lap when he retired his Decker logging #9R to the infield with a broken driveshaft.
This turned the lead over to Tittle, who was able to run off the final seven laps without a serious challenge to pick up the win. It was Tittle's second victory of the 2001 campaign at Penn Can. Mike Colsten pulled off a late pass of Mike Decker to take second spot with Decker finishing third. Bill Huff and Jeff Bronson completed the tiop five. Chris Schupp, Tom McGurrin, Chris Weaver, Rick Whitney, and Tom Hager completed the top ten. Despite his 17th place finish, Brian Weaver clinched his third Penn Can Modified championship on Friday night.
Weaver needed only to start the 50 lap Spectacular to assure himself of the championship. Harry Marvin Jr., Tom McGurrin, and Chris Schupp were heat race winners with Bill Huff picking up the win in the Pump 'n Pantry Last Chance Race.
Allen Coy picked up the win in the 25 lap Late Model Spectacular, his sixth win of the season. The win also clinched the 2001 Late Model Championship for the pilot of the Snake Creek Marine/Cooley Stone sponsored #53, but Coy quickly came from his ninth starting position to take over the lead prior to the halfway mark. Once out front, Coy was not seriously challenged the rest of the way as he drove to victory. Defending champion Gene Sharpsteen advanced to second, bur was never able to make a run at Coy over the final laps. In a show of sportsmanship, Sharpsteen came to victory lane to offer his congratulations to Coy. Dave Zona finished third ahead of Joe Damiano and Jim Sherman. Positions six through ten were filled by RJ Windhausen, Dick Stark, Jason Carmen, Keith Mudge, and Jim O'Hara. Joe Damiano, Gene Sharpsteen, and RJ Widhausen won Late Model qualifying events.
In Super Stock action, Jamie Shea came home with his ninth feature win of the season in the 25 lap Penn Can Spectacular. The win also assured Shea of the 2001 track championship as well. The closing laps of this event featured a battle not only for the feature win, but the championship as well. Chris Piasecki pressured Shea all the way, with the championship on the line as whichever of the two finished better would be the champion. Piasecki pressured Shea all the way, but could not find a way past and Shea drove his Lenox Propane/Lenox Dairy Bar/PS Transportation #J1 to the feature win and the championship. Piasecki crossed the line second ahead of Tracy Gregory, Gary Roberts, and Brett Spoor. Dwayne Robbins, Chris Hunsinger, Dan Vauter, Glenn Wilcox, and Ken Sparks completed the top ten. Super Stock heat wins went to Chris Piasecki, Tracy Gregory, and Brett Spoor.
The Pure Stock spectacular saw a new face in victory lane as veteran Bob Boynton picked up his first ever Penn Can feature win. Boynton held off a challenge from Denny Decker to pick up the victory. Shane Wolff finished third while Chad Stone crossed the line fourth to clinch the Pure Stock championship. Bob Stillson completed the top five. Nate Evans, Craig Decker, Jerry Whitmarsh, Keith Wilkins, and Harry Uhl Jr. completed the top ten. Shane Wolff, Kevin Boynton, and Bob Boynton were Pure Stock heat winners. Bob Stillson was the consolation winner.
