HORTON, STONE AND SMITH WIN IN FALL FOLIAGE FINALE AT PENN CAN

SPEEDWAY SUSQUEHANNA, PA – Kirk Horton used his second place starting

position to his advantage while winning the Modified feature and a Victoria 200 qualifier

position at Penn Can Speedway on Sunday evening. Dan Stone and Mike Smith also won

features that were part of rescheduled action from Friday evening to Sunday afternoon.

Agreat field of thirty eight modifieds signed in to race for the Victoria 200 spot.

Horton started in the starting position for the 40 lap, $2,500 to win feature race. Chuck

Akulis, who raced in his last ever feature at Penn Can Speedway, had motor problems in

the heat. He was force to use a back up car of Mike Colsten’s for the feature and he had

start in the rear of the 26-car field despite drawing the pole position. Horton had the

dominant car early in the race while George Kostelansky, Carl Nagel, and Rick Whitney

kept the pressure on Horton. A early caution for spun cars on lap six slowed the field. On

the restart Horton jumped back to the lead with Clapperton now moving to the second

spot. Invaders Jeff Rudalavage, Kenny Brightbill, and Keith Hofman were now making

their way to the top ten.

Racing continued caution free for the next eighteen curcuits with Horton holding off

Clapperton, Nagel, Tom Hager, and Whitney. Caution came back out on lap twentyfour

with Bob Hamm coming to a stop on the front strtch. This brought the field together

again. Horton continued to be strong on the restart and lead until the caution flew for

Brian Weaver’s stalled car on the front stretch. On the restart the cars of Carl Nagel,

Whitney, Rudalavage , Kostelansky, and Jim Mahaney got tangled on the front stretch.

With the green back out Horton held off Clapperton for the win and the qualified spot for

Fulton. Clapperton finished a strong second followed by Hager have his best Penn Can

run. Fouth went to Russ Harrington with Doug Worthing getting fifth. Brightbill, Mike

Ricci, Tom McGurren, Keith Hoffman, and Al Rudalavage rounded out the top ten.

Dan Stone, once again dominated the Late Model field. He pulled out to an early lead with

only Alan Coy his closest competition. Coy was unable to get within striking distance,

Stone went on to win his 11 race of the year at Penn Can. Coy finished second followed

by Gene Sharpsteen, Keith Mudge, and Al Whitaker rounding out the top five.

The IMCA Modifieds took to the track to only finish out the season, but to crown a

champion as well. Frank Bonham looked like he might win his first win of the season in

the early goings of the race, however it was not meant to be. With only 6 laps to go, Mike

Smith made his way around Bonham and pulled off the fifth victory of the season. Bonham

came home in third after getting passed by Sean Lias in the closing laps. Cory Fachini and

Tom Rose rounded out the top five. Fachini was also crowned the IMCA track champion

of the 2000 season after winning two races throughout the season.

PENN NOTES: An excellent field of cars in all three divisions made for exciting racing all

evening. Modifieds needed five heats and two consis to qualify the twenty six car starting

field. Races were run off quickly with very little delay ending the show at 9:15 on this

Sunday rain date. All features ran off with few cautions making for an action packed

evening of racing. Plans are now in the works for the 2001 season at Penn Can Speedway.

Congratualations to Cory Fachini for winning the IMCA Championship by one point over

Mike Smith. Three division point titles were decided by one one point seperating first and

second.
