THE DOCTOR DOUBLES AT ROLLING WHEELS

ELBRIDGE, NY...Danny Johnson pulled out all the stops and drover to two feature wins last Tuesday, July 4, at Rolling Wheels Raceway. First he topped Brett Hearn in the make up 25-lap DIRT Modified feature rain delayed from May 31, on the World of Outlaws Special program. Next he beat Steve Paine to the wire to win the 100-lap Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series Firecracker 100. Matt Sheppard took top honors in the 20-lap DIRT Sportsman show.

The 100-lap Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series saw Pat Ward and Tim Fuller lead a pack of 31 cars to Dave Farney's green flag. Fuller charged into the lead followed by Ward, Alan Johnson, Chuck Bower and Danny Johnson. Fuller lead until lap 13, when Danny Johnson blew by him for first in lapped traffic. The first yellow of the race flew on lap 26, when the 15r, of Donny Radd slowed on the speedway front stretch.

As the race went green again, lap 29, Johnson continued to lead the way over Ward, Steve Paine, Fuller and Gary Tomkins. The worst accident of the night came on lap 33, when Jeremie Corcoran hooked a wheel with the cars of Bobby Varin and Ray Bliss Jr. resulting in a hard flip down the main straight away. Corcoran's car landed on all four wheels with a violent impact. Jeremie was shaken and held at the track for observation.

During this yellow a number of pit stops took place. Tim McCreadie, driving the number 9 Kinney Drugs machine, was one of those to make a pit stop. The restart was not kind to McCreadie, as he spit a front wheel off sending it sailing into the parking lot off turn four. McCreadie's race was done for the night. Also losing a wheel was the 93 driven by Bobby Varin, on lap 52.

The last half of the feature was mainly run under green flag conditions, with Johnson pulling away to a ten car lead over Paine. The only yellow came on lap 67, when Billy Decker slowed his machine in the second turn with a flat tire.

Johnson sailed home in his Sweetner's Plus Troyer for an easy victory over Steve Paine in his Junell Corporation TEO. Alan Johnson brought his Pillsbury "Doughboy" Bicknell in third followed by Tomkins in his Pennzoil Bicknell and Kenny Tremont aboard his Emerick Associates Troyer. Alan Johnson's third place earned him a guaranteed starting spot for Eckerd 200 at Syracuse in October.

The 25-lap make up feature for the modifieds saw Chuck Bower as the early leader of the race. Both he and Vic Coffey were able to establish a ten car lead over the rest of the field when the yellow flew on lap eight when Todd Milton looped on the main straight away.

This bunched the field together allowing Brett Hearn to pass Coffey for second. Another yellow, lap 10, for Vince Vitale breaking down in turn four, allowed Hearn the opportunity to pass Bower on the restart for the lead.

Hearn pulled away to a solid advantage over the field, but again the yellow flew on lap 15 when Billy Decker slowed in the second turn. This put Danny Johnson, who had just passed Bower for second, right on Hearn's rear deck.

The restart saw Hearn and Johnson repeat what they have done so often, a battle royal for the lead. Hearn seemed to be able to pull away off the second turn, but Johnson would catch right back up again as they sailed down the front straight.

On lap 24, as if Johnson had been saving his tires, he drove low in the third turn a performed the patented slide job on Hearn exiting the fourth turn for the lead.

Johnson came home one car length ahead of Hearn. Chuck Bower secured third in his Currier Plastics modified. Coffey and Alan Johnson rounded out the top five.

The 20-lap DIRT Sportsman main saw Chad Brachmann lead Justin Haers and Matt Sheppard. On lap two the yellow flew for a spin by Jeremy Pitcher in the third turn. The restart allowed the high flying Paine Motorsports machine of Sheppard to blast by Brachmann for the lead. Sheppard then established a full straight away lead over Brachmann, Haers, John Plumb and Joe Beyea. A spin by Bill Haley on lap 11 brought out the final yellow of the race. Sheppard came home the winner followed by Brachmann, Haers, Plumb and Steve Hall.

The next event at Rolling Wheels raceway will be another Advance Auto Parts Super DIRT Series program on Sunday, August 20. The DIRT Sportsman and Pit Stop Convenience Stores Enduro cars will round out that program.
