SEARS TOPS SUNOCO RACE FUELS SPORTSMAN RUN; MOD MAIN TO TOMKINS

WEEDSPORT, NY...Tim Sears took top honors last Sunday at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway with a victory in the 30-lap Sunoco Race Fuels Mr. DIRT Sportsman Tour combined race. Gary Tomkins grabbed off the DIRT Modified 35-lap feature. In full fender action it was James Henry continuing to dominate the Pro-Stock division with a win. The 4-Cylinder Enduro class win went to Jamie Walters.

Donnie Wetmore Jr., who set fast time earlier in the evening with a lap of 16.934 seconds, 79.721 mph, took the early lead in the Sunoco Sportsman 30. Tim Sears was second but lost that position to Tim Clemons on lap five. One lap later Clemons ducked low in exiting the second turn to take the lead from Wetmore Jr.. Clemons then drew away from the pack. Sears maintained second after Wetmore began to fad. Bob Henry Jr. ran in third.

The first of four yellows came on lap 12 when Greg Doust slowed on the backstretch with mechanical woes that ended his evening early. On lap later the yellow came out when Scott George and Russ Hefti came together in the first turn. Both cars were able to fall in the back of the pack and continue on their way.

On lap 16, Henry Jr.'s run came to a smokey end as billows of white smoke showed from the front of his machine going down the back stretch. The yellow flew for the third time.

Sears was able to pass Clemons on the restart using the high lane around the speedway. Sears then pulled out to a four car advantage over Clemons. Stewart Friesen was on the move driving the John McKenney number 19J. Friesen took third and start to slowly draw closer to Clemons in second.

Lap 25 saw Wetmore slow on the front chute with a flat tire. At the same time John Pfeffer's car lost a wheel, that was run into by Mike Button for the final yellow of the race.

Sears held strong as Friesen ducked under Clemons exiting the fourth turn. Clemons held on for second with Friesen a close third. Tim Dwyer came home in fourth with Eldon Payne finishing fifth.

Heat wins went to Wetmore Jr., Bill Shantel Jr., Sears, Kevin Wills and Clemons. the consolation races were won by Jessica Zemken and Scott George.

The 35-lap DIRT Modified feature saw pole sitter Mike Bliss hold off the excellent field of modifieds and 358-modifieds for 21 laps. Bliss over came to restarts. the first was on lap six following Darryl Ruggles stopping on track with a flat tire. The other restart came on lap 14 when Jeremie Cocoran and Jim LaRock came together in the first turn.

Bliss finally lost the lead to Gary Tomkins when Tomkins ducked low in the third turn to move past for the lead. Alan Johnson and brother Danny were the fastest cars on the speedway. On lap 25, Alan took second with Danny passing Bliss two laps later for third.

A late race yellow flew, on lap 33, when Jeremie Cocoran looped his machine on the front stretch. This set up a green-white-checker finish.

Tomkins held on the win as Alan drove his younger brother high through the first and second turn to maintain his edge on second. Danny came home in third followed by Billy Decker and Tim Fuller. Bliss faded all the way back to eighth at the finish.

The 20-lap Pro-Stock feature saw only one yellow slow the race. Fred Dennis took the early lead. the yellow came early, lap five, when Jack Terrell looped out in the fourth turn.

On the restart Dennis stumbled allowing James Henry to take the lead. As the field came into the first turn on lap six Dennis spun out in front of everyone. This caused the field to scramble, as Tommy Barron made contact with the Dennis machine.

James Henry maintained the lead, however close friend Fred Arden was slowing catching up to the Henry car. On lap 14. Arden drifted to the high groove in turn one, but fell short of completing the pass.

One lap later Arden drew along side of the Henry but had to back off as lapped traffic became an issue. Henry went on to score the win followed by Arden in second. Bill Hallett held on for third with Frank Guererri Jr. and Dennis rounding out the top five finishers.

This Sunday, June 22, sees the return of the Central New York Mini-Sprints. they will be joining a full regular program of DIRT Modified/358-Modified, Sportsman, Pro-Stock and 4-Cylinder action. Race time will be at 7 p.m. sharp.
