JOHNSON GRABS WIN FROM McCREADIE ON LAST LAP PASS
WEEDSPORT, NY..."The doctor" Danny Johnson performed surgery as he took a final lap restart of the DIRT Modified feature in perfect measure. Bob McCreadie , who had lead the main event since lap five, drifted high in the fourth turn allowing Johnson and his son Tim McCreadie to both get by him. In the DIRT Sportsman the victory went to Russ Hefti. Bill Hallett was the Pro-Stock winner and Greg DeChick took top honors in the 4- cylinder Enduros. A special lawnmower race saw Bill Oliver grab the victory.
The delighted Oliver, with trophy in hand, stated, "I've always dreamed of this, and now I am starting to dream about the next time we come back during the annual fair."
The 35-lap DIRT Modified main saw Joe Beyea take the early lead over Ryan Phelps, Bob McCreadie, Steve Hulsizer and Vince Vitale.
McCreadie took the lead on a lap five restart following a yellow on lap four for debris on the track. After McCreadie was in the lead a three car tangle in the second turn involving Billy Decker, Matt Sheppard and Jeremie Corcoran slow the race again.
McCreadie now found himself with Scott Prentice banging on the back door. Through a number of yellows, Danny Johnson worked his way up to third by lap 17.
McCreadie pulled out to a full 2.5 second lead, nearly a full straight away over Johnson and Prentice, when the yellow flew on lap 34 as Butch Tittle lost a left rear wheel in the fourth turn. With no place to go Scott Prentice clipped the bumper on the Tittle machine and spun. He tried to get his third place spot back, but officials put him to the rear for not maintaining his position under yellow.
As the green flag flew, McCreadie drifted high in the fourth turn allowing both Johnson and Tim McCreadie to complete their respective passes for first and second.
Johnson held on for the win, followed by Tim and Bob McCreadie. Tim Fuller came home fourth followed by Alan Johnson in fifth.
"My heart goes out to Bob," stated Danny in victory lane. "And my heart is glad I was able to win."
The 20-lap Sportsman feature proved to be a crash-fest as six yellow slowed the race.
Early leader Ryan Richardson lost the lead to Russ Hefti on a second lap restart following the first of these yellows. Yellows also flew on laps 2, 7, 10,12 and 18. The last of these collect front runner Greg Doust. During this same yellow points leader Eldon Payne Jr. looped his mount in the third turn. He reported to the back of the field.
Richardson cross the finish line behind Hefti. John Pfeffer finished third while Ron Loveless and Jim Bowman rounded out the top five.
The 20-lap Pro-Stock main saw Bill Hallett lead all 20 laps to claim his first win of the 2003 campaign. Tom Barron was the first car out following a broken front end suspension part.
On lap six Jack Terrell slowed on the track to cause the yellow to fly.
Jim Langenback and Wayne Ellison came together in the fourth turn on lap 15 to cause the third yellow of the race. A last lap yellow flew when Jipp Ortiz lost a wheel off his car in the second turn.
Hallett took the win followed by Jeremy Clark, Ray Maloney, Ricky Breed and Joey Ladouceur.
