HAERS'S SMALL BLOCK WINS AT CAYUGA COUNTY, PHELPS PICKS UP FIRST SPORTSMAN FEATURE
WEEDSPORT, NY...Justin Haers, from Phelps, NY, powered his 358-modified to a feature win at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Haers became the first driver of the year to win a big block show driving a small block. Ryan Phelps earned his first DIRT Sportsman win of the year at Cayuga County. Tommy Barron made it three wins in a row for the Pro-stock division, while James Werner picked up the win in the Pit Stop Convenience Stores 4-Cylinder Enduros.
Tom Sears Jr. was the early leader in the 35-lap DIRT Modified feature. On lap three the yellow flew for the first of four separate times when Dave Axton slowed on the backstretch. The restart was aborted two times, the first when Jim Burke looped his number 6pac on the backstretch and the second time when Sears Jr. did not fire first.
Sears Jr. held the lead for just one circuit when Haers powered by him for the lead. Sears Jr. was second followed by Roy Shields, Tim Fuller and Pat ward.
The yellow flew a second time when Tim Harris stopped in the third turn on lap seven. Haers held off Fuller and Ward on the restart as Chuck Bower joined the group of four cars at the front of the field. Ward was able to wrestle second from Fuller> Bower tried the outside grove, and at one time looked to have been able to secure second, only to fall backwards.
On lap 13 the yellow flew when Danny Johnson stopped at the exit of the fourth turn with a flat tire. He quickly rejoined the back of the field without losing a lap. On lap 16 the yellow flew for the final time when a four car accident took place in the fourth turn. Involved in this melee were Tim McCreadie, Scott Prentice, Jimmy Phelps and Ron Cartwright. Phelps would return for just three laps while Mccreadie made an additional five laps only to pull off the track.
Haers held back the charges of Fuller over the final twelve laps to secure his first win of his career in a big block event. Fuller finished second followed by Gary Tomkins, Bower and Ward.
The 20-lap DIRT Sportsman main saw Eric Richardson, complete with a new number, R12, jump into the lead at the drop of the green. He built a three car advantage when the yellow flew on lap four for a multi-car pile up in the fourth turn, which saw Tim Sears ride up the concrete wall. The restart saw yet another pile up in the exact same spot, only third time eight cars were involved.
Ryan Phelps took the lead on the restart and began to show his heels to Ron Loveless, Bob Henry Jr. and Eldon Payne Jr.. Phelps lost any advantage he had built up when Don Burke made contact with the third turn wall to bring out the yellow on lap nine.
Bob Henry Jr. took second on the restart as Eldon Payne Jr. moved up to third, as Loveless looped through the infield dirt kicking up a dust storm. He returned many position down on the track.
Phelps had his run to the checkers interrupted only one more time, on lap 16, when Mark Conrow spun in the fourth turn. Phelps took the win followed by Payne Jr., Henry Jr., Loren Lincoln and John Juhl.
In Pro-Stock action the 20-lap feature went green-to-checkers and averaged 68.942 miles per hour. Mike Watkins led the parade around the speedway at the drop of the green as a tight pack of five cars held the front of the field. On lap 12, Tommy Barron drove high around Watkins on the backstretch to take the lead. Barron then pulled away to claim his third Pro-Stock feature win in a row and his fourth of the season at Cayuga County. Dave McCready came home in second followed by Watkins, Fred Dennis and Ricky Breed in fifth.
This Sunday will mark yet another regular week of racing at Cayuga County. It will be River Forest Campgrounds night at the speedway. On the track the four weekly divisions; Modified, Sportsman, Pro-Stock and 4-Cylinder Enduros will make for formidable action. race time begins at 7 p.m. sharp.
