DECKER TAKES EASY WIN, HOBBS FLIPS ACROSS FINISH LINE, BUSSEY RIDES OVER THE WALL
WEEDSPORT, NY...Billy Decker was able to start on the outside pole and take the 35-lap DIRT Modified feature last Sunday at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Tim Sears picked up the honors in the DIRT Sportsman class with a late race pass. In the Pro-stock division it looked as if Patrick Hobbs would claim the gold. But a one lap dash to the checkers found Hobbs upside down and in second crossing the finish line. The win went to Tommy Barron. Durwood Lyboldt won the special Pit Stop Convenience Stores 25-lap 4-Cylinder Enduro race.
Billy Decker and Jim Burke brought the field down for the green flag in the 35-lap DIRT Modified feature. Decker immediately jumped into the lead and was able to build a three second advantage over Jim LaRock, Burke, Pat Ward and Scott Prentice.
On lap 11 the yellow flew when Burke made contact with the fourth turn wall. This bunched the field together and eliminated Decker's huge lead. Ward was not able to stay with Decker on the restart as he had his hands full with a side-by-side battle for second with Scott Prentice.
The yellow appeared again, lap 15, when Bob McCreadie broke a rear suspension piece and slowed to a stop in the fourth turn. Alan Johnson was now in third, passing Prentice on the restart. Two other short yellows for stopped cars on the track slowed the race's average speed to just 55.355 mph.
Johnson began to pressure Ward and finally passed for second on lap 33. It was just too little too late to prevent Decker from securing the victory. Johnson, Prentice, Ward and Tim McCreadie rounded out the top five finishers.
In Sportsman action Tim Sears and John Plumb were in a torrid battle at the front of the field. On lap three the yellow flew when the third and fourth place cars, Ryan Richardson and Rob Bussey, spun together in the first turn. This minor incident would be Bussey's least worry. On the restart Bussey came together with another car sending him into the backstretch concrete wall. His car slide up and onto the top of the concrete barrier and then sailed out of view over the wall. Bussey emerged uninjured, but his car had to be towed back to the pits.
Sears and Plumb were a story of their own as they swapped leads at the front of the field. On lap 10, Plumb made contact with Sears as Plumb attempted to dive under the Sears's machine in the third turn. This sent Sears wiggling and Plumb used the momentum to take first. On lap 18 the yellow flew for the final time when Shawn Donath came to a stop on the inside of the first and second turns.
This set up a dash to the checkers in which Sears dove low and made contact with Plumb. The rear of the Sears' machine made final contact with the Plumb car, straightening the Plumb machine back in the correct direction.
Sears took the victory with Plumb coming home in second.321 seconds back of Sears. Greg Doust nipped a smoking Russ Hefti at the line for third. Bob Henry Jr. came home in fifth.
The 20-lap Pro-stock feature started off quietly with Mike Watkins taking the lead in front of Patrick Hobbs. On lap five Hobbs passed for the lead. On lap 11, eventual winner Tommy Barron looped his Camaro in the fourth turn.
A yellow on lap 19 set up one the wildest CCFS finishes ever. Zack Shove, running second made slight contact with the Hobbs car, send Hobbs almost headlong into the front stretch wall exiting the final turn of the race. Hobbs's car then went sideways and was sent flipping over onto it's roof under the starter's stand. A small fire erupted under the hood, in which Safety Crews were on the scene of the accident before it was over.
Hobbs was credited with second followed by Ricky Breed, Fred Dennis and Mike Watkins.
This Sunday will be Expert Tire night in the VIP rooms. On the track the DIRT Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro-Stocks and 4 cylinder cars will entertain. Race time is at 7 p.m. sharp.
