McCREADIE TOPS CAYUGA COUNTY, SCHULZ WIN HOOSIER SERIES OPENER
WEEDSPORT, NY...Dave Schulz won the 2002 Hoosier Tire Pro-Stock Super DIRT Series opener last Sunday at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway. Bob McCreadie returned to his former self and picked up a great DIRT Modified feature win. This was McCreadie's first feature win at Cayuga County since September 5, 1999. In the sportsman division the win went to Tim Sears. The Pit Stop Convenience Store 4-Cylinder Enduro was won by Jay McGillicuddy. Jerry Carcie Sr. and Dan Hoffman Sr. rounded out the Enduro top three.
Topping the racing program last Sunday was the season opening Hoosier Tire Pro-Stock Super DIRT Series. Pete Stefanski and Dave Schulz started on the front by virtue of winning the first two of four heat races. The other two heats were won by Joey Ladouceur and Jon Miller.
Schulz jumped into an early lead with Stefanski in second. On lap five the yellow flew when Jay Resch spun on the front stretch. This set up a restart in which the yellow flew a second time to make for a better restart. One lap later the yellow was out again when Phil barone spun to a stop on top of the inside second turn concrete wall. Barone was freed from this obstacle and returned to the race.
The restart saw a nasty accident in which Fred Dennis's number 2 burst into flames after impact with two other cars on the front chute. The DIRT Emergency crew quickly quenched the flames and Dennis returned to the infield uninjured.
Schulz maintained his lead over Stefanski for the next thirteen laps. Then on lap 19 Stefanski slowed to cause the yellow to fly. This moved Tom Barron into second followed by Charlotte winner Scott Kerwin and Ladouceur.
Schulz took the win with Barron in second. Ladouceur, Jon Miller and Kerwin rounded out the top five. Schulz would suffer a fine in post race inspection, lowing his earning to $1,200 for the race. He remains the points leader going into the next event at Gasport International Speedway on Sunday, June 23.
Thirty-five Pro-stocks were on hand for this opener. Thirty- two of them started the 25-lap feature run.
The 35-lap Modified main saw McCreadie, who started on the pole, dash to a convincing lead of some 4.3 seconds before the yellow flag flew on lap 25 when Ray Bliss Jr. slowed on the track following a fantastic run which saw Bliss Jr. run in the top five for nearly 20 laps.
McCreadie was able to hold off second place runner Alan Johnson on the restart and maneuver to a half second advantage at the finish line. Johnson came home in second followed by Scott Prentice, Tim Fuller and Chuck Bower. Danny Johnson, hot off a victory the night before at Middletown drove his new troyer to a solid sixth place finish.
The 20-lap Sportsman main event saw Tim Sears start on the pole and lead all 20 laps. Only one yellow slowed the race, that coming on lap five when Greg Doust stopped on the backstretch. Doust was able to refire his machine and return at the back of the field.
Sears took this win by 1.28 seconds over Shawn Donath, who had a terrific restart following the yellow, moving from fifth to second. Ryan Richardson came home in third followed by Mark Yorker and Randy Chrysler.
This Sunday will be River Forest Campground, WACK-WNNR Radio, Cold Fire Safety and K&S Car Wash night at the speedway. On tap is a regular program of races for the Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro-Stocks and 4-cylinder Enduros. Race time will begin at 7 p.m. sharp.
