Defending Track Champ finallygets on track at Cornwall

2002 had been a very frustrating season for defendingModified track champion Bill Mullin. All that changed onSunday night at Cornwall Motor Speedway as Mullin dominatedhis heat and then led all 30 laps to score his first featurewin of the new campaign.

Mullin, who has been beset by mechanical problems sinceopening night, showed some veteran knowledge of the fastquarter mile, using a distinct groove on the surface that noother driver could match. Mark Hitchcock made some nifty moveson the final restart to grab second followed by Kyle Jacobs,Stephane LaFrance and Dan Jalbert.

Dave Bissonnette worked his way quickly from his fourth rowstarting spot to the lead in the first two laps and went on towin the 20 lap Late Model event. Bissonnette had just onetense moment when Todd Fletcher got by on a restart with 6laps remaining. However the Cornwall driver rocketed back intothe lead on the next lap and then held on for the triumph.Fletcher had to settle for second with Roy Tarbell, MarcelPecore and Travis Back rounding out the fast five.

Gaetan Amesse came into the night as the points leader inthe Duke Stocks, despite not winning a race. Amesse changedthat with a victory in the 15 lap affair and now sports a 14point lead in the standings. He took the top spot just beforethe halfway mark after he came together with Robin Laframboisein a battle. Kees Van Winden was second in front of KenSproule, Greg Ezard and Kevin McRae.

Rosco Garreau survived a wild and wacky last lap whichincluded a car slamming into the victory lane signboards towin the 12 lap Rookie feature. Andrew Russell who wrecked acar the previous week came back with a solid second placefinish with Danielle Legault rounding out the top 3.
