FULLER AND COMFORT SCORE WINS AT CCFS
WEEDSPORT, NY...Tim Fuller, from Edwards, NY, won his first DIRT Modified feature at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway last Sunday, while Karl Comfort, from Shortsville, NY, won the 30-lap "Dig Safely New York" DIRT Sportsman Super DIRT Series feature. Picking up the victory in the Pit Stop Convenience Stores Enduro was former open wheel competitor Jim Cronin. A special appearance of the Central New York Mini-sprints saw Mike Emhof take the 15-lap feature victory.
The 30-lap "Dig Safely New York" DIRT Sportsman Super DIRT Series event saw pole sitter Karl Comfort and Tom Juhl on the outside pole bring the field of 30 cars to starter Dave Farney's green flag. Comfort immediately took the lead as he and Juhl pulled out a five car advantage over Willy Decker in third, Dave VanHorn Jr. fourth and Kevin Wills in fifth.
The first of six yellows came on lap four when Justin Haers spun in the second turn. The restart saw the 2000 Sportsman Rookie of the Year, Stewart Friesen, come to a stop on the back stretch with a broken front end. Tim Sears was able to pass Wills for fifth on this restart. The next restart saw a multi-car pileup on the front stretch involving Randy Chrysler, Lance Willix, Rob Ledingham and Steve Gray.
The race finally resumed under green on lap six with Comfort and Juhl pulling away from the field. On lap 15 the yellow flew again when Gary Gallerie and Jim LaRock came together in the second turn just as Comfort was entering lapped traffic. Still the running order remained the same of Comfort, Juhl, Decker VanHorn and Sears.
Lap 18 saw the yellow flag unfurl again as Paul Carey slapped the first turn wall. The restart saw Tim Clemons, running in the top ten, spin entering the first turn. VanHorn lost third to Decker on this restart.
Comfort established nearly a full straight away lead over the course of the final ten laps. Juhl finished a distant second followed by Sears, who had taken the position on lap 21 from Decker. Decker finished fourth, with Chad Brachmann coming home in fifth.
Forty-seven sportsman cars were on hand making for five heat races and three consolation events. Heat wins went to Comfort, Juhl, Decker, VanHorn Jr. and Wills. The consolation races were won by Steve Gray, Joe Beyea and John Plumb.
The 35-lap DIRT Modified feature saw Dave Axton blast into the lead followed by Tim Fuller, Vince Vitale, Ray Bliss Jr. and Jim Gabriel Jr..
The race slowed on lap three when Bob McCreadie spun his car in the third turn to bring out a yellow. The restart saw Axton hold off the flying Fuller for just one lap. But Fuller was too powerful, passing for the lead on lap five. Fuller then began to build a lead over Axton, Danny Johnson, Billy Decker and Gary Tomkins.
Johnson was slowly catching Axton. Finally on lap 22, Johnson caught Axton in lapped traffic and took second. It seemed as if only a caution who allow Johnson a chance at Fuller and the lead. That yellow came on lap 31, when Axton slowed on the back stretch. Johnson was now on Fuller's rear bumper, but with so few laps and Fuller's speed, Johnson was never able to mount a challenge.
Fuller took the victory followed closely by Johnson. Decker finished third followed by Tim McCreadie and Tomkins.
The CNY Mini-Sprints lined up for a 15 lap feature with Corey Sparks on the pole and James Brush on the outside pole. After crash filled heat races, including a number of flips, the race fans expected the large field of 23 starters to run into a number of yellow flags. The feature was about to go green-to-checkers.
Brush was the early leader of the event until the eleventh place starter, Mike Emhof passed him for the lead on lap five. Emhof then ran off and hide from the rest of the field.
The pace was so fast that only seven cars would end up on the lead lap. Emhof took the victory followed by Billy White, Lance O'Dell, James Brush and Corey Sparks.
This Sunday, July 1, will see the return of the Empire Super Sprints to Cayuga County. They will be joining a full program of DIRT Modified and Sportsman racing.
Race time will be at 7 p.m. sharp with pit gates opening at 5 p.m.. The Cayuga County Fair Speedway is located just east of the village of Weedsport, NY at exit 40 of the New York State Thruway.
