YOUTH RISES TO THE TOP AT CAYUGA COUNTY
WEEDSPORT, NY...It not that being young is a prerequisite to win at the Cayuga County Fair Speedway, but it sure seemed important last Monday when a special holiday weekend program began the annual Cayuga County Fair week long celebrations. On hand were the DIRT Modifieds, Sportsman and Empire Super Sprints. It seemed that every feature winner just kept getting younger. Tim McCreadie won his first big-block feature in the night cap 35-lap main event. Bill Coffey piloted his ESS racer to victory in their 20-lap feature, while 16 year old high school junior, Matt Sheppard won the DIRT Sportsman feature.
The 35-lap feature began with Jimmy Phelps grabbing the lead with Vic Coffey running a strong second. On lap eight, Tim McCreadie began his charge through the top five and into the lead. He passed Phelps on lap 11 to take the point. He then began to pull out a healthy advantage over Phelps, Billy Decker and Gary Tomkins.
The first yellow flew on lap 15 when veteran Pat ward looped his mount in the first turn. Two laps later the yellow was flying when Rick Miller coasted to a stop on the speedway. Through this all McCreadie maintained a slim lead over Decker, who had earned second on lap 16 during the first restart.
McCreadie came home the winner followed by Decker, Danny Johnson, Phelps, and Tomkins.
"I was worried with Billy (Decker) back there," stated an elated Tim McCreadie in victory lane. "Billy is a tough competitor and I really had to work hard to get this victory."
The worst modified accident of the night came in the first modified heat race when Brian Weaver had a part break on his car as he was entering the third turn. Hie throttle stuck open and he impacted the concrete outside wall, flipping over violently six times and landing totaling his car. Weaver was later taken to Auburn Hospital where he was reportedly shaken up and wanting to have a doctor look at him.
The 20-lap Sportsman feature saw Matt Sheppard take the lead right from the drop of the green until the checkers flew. Early yellows fore minor spins slowed the race somewhat. Following Sheppard across the finish line in a tight battle of their own were Tim Sears and Mike Button in second and third respectively. Steve Gray and Greg Doust rounded out the top five sportsman finishers.
The 20-lap ESS main saw Bill Coffey take the lead from Bob Podolak on lap eight. Podolak, who was running a solid race was forced to drop from the race on lap 14 with mechanical woes of his own.
Cayuga County Fair Speedway offers another speedway special this Sunday when they host their annual 358-Modified qualify. the first 358-modified over the finish line picks up a guaranteed starting spot at Syracuse in the Sunoco Race Fuels 200, during Super DIRT Week XVIII. Joining the mods/358-mods, will be the sportsman and a special Hoosier Tire Mr. DIRT Pro-Stock Championship race and enduro. Race time will be at 7 p.m. sharp.
