D.J. POWERS SMALL BLOCK CAR TO CAYUGA COUNTY WIN, WEAVER SETS NEW TRACK RECORD

WEEDSPORT, NY...Danny Johnson, from Rochester, NY, took the 35-lap DIRT Modified feature last Sunday at the Cayuga County fair Speedway. What was most impressive was he won driving his small block. "You always have to watch the big blocks on restarts," stated Johnson. "But tonight the track was just heavy enough for the small block to work well."

Matt Sheppard closed out the weekend with a DIRT Sportsman victory to back up his win the night before at the Canandaigua Speedway. Also earning victories on the night were Don Potts in the 40-lap enduro and Skip Travis, from Penn Yan, picking up $500 for winning an eleven car demolition derby.

The yellow flew immediately at the start of the DIRT Modified feature event when Jim Burke had his front end collapse as he crossed the start-finish line to take the green flag. Burke ended his night hitting the front stretch concrete.

The restart saw Scott Prentice continue to lead, but before he could set up a rhythm, the yellow flew again this time for Dave Axton, who spun in the first turn.

Prentice continued to lead over Pat Ward, Danny Johnson and Tim McCreadie. Danny Johnson slipped past Ward for second on lap 16 and set his sights on Prentice. Four laps later, Johnson pulled under Prentice exiting the second turn and blasted into the lead down the back stretch. D.J. then proceeded to pull away from the rest of the field. Prentice held on for second with Billy Decker passing McCreadie for third with just three laps remaining. McCreadie exited the track a lap later leaving fourth to Gary Tomkins, with Ward rounding out the top five.

Brian Weaver broke Will Cagle's ten year old lap record of 15.93 seconds, turning in a 15.65 second lap during the first heat race. The track was wickedly fast after track crews have been working to put the speedway back in shape.

The 20-lap Sportsman main event saw three different leaders during the first five laps of the main event. An accident on the first lap saw Russ Hefti destroy the front end on his machine and exit via tow truck to the pits.

Matt Sheppard was able to take the lead on a lap four restart, passing Tom Mettler for the position. Sheppard then held off James Spano for the victory. Spano finished second followed by first timer Steve Gray. Gray was making his first appearance of the year at the speedway. Mike Button finished fourth followed by Greg Doust in fifth.

Racing returns this Sunday with a full card of Modifieds, Sportsman and Enduro racing, plus the return of the Dwarf cars. Race time will be at 7 p.m. sharp.
