JOHN LEIBY, RICKY RUTT, PHIL RETTER, FLOYD SCHMIDT, AND RALPH UTTER JR. ARE STURDAY NIGHT STARS AT LAKE MOC-A-TEK

(Lakeville, Pa.) As hot as the weather was last Saturday night, the

on-track action on the fast Lake Moc-A-Tek quarter mile was even hotter.

John Leiby came home the winner of the 358 Modified feature, his second

victory of the season. Ricky Rutt also earned his second win of the

campaign in Sportsman action. "Racer X" Phil Retter won his second

Street Stock feature while Floyd Schmidt prevailed in a three way photo

finish for his third Pure Stock win of the season. Ralph Utter Jr. won

his third 250cc Micro Sprint feature.

Joe Uliana and Scott Frack paced the field to the green flag with

Frack grabbing the advantage off the start. It didn't take long for

Leiby to move his Harrington Speed and Custom/Eastlake Party Rental

sponsored mount into contention. He made the winning pass in the very

early stages of the 25 lap feature as he was able to drive past Frack for

the top spot. Once out front, Lieby had to survive a couple of caution

flags, but on each restart he was able to open up his lead and was never

seriously challenged the rest of the way as he picked up his second

feature win of the season. Scott Frack was Leiby's closest pursuer, but

he could not make a run at john and settled for a seasons best runner-up

finish ahead of George Hildebrant, Joey Grammes, and Alan Kellogg.

Current point leader Don Roselli finished sixth to protect his point lead

ahead of Nick Barassi and Bill Reese. Bobby Trapper picked up a ninth

place finish in his first start aboard a former Mitsubishi sponsored car

formerly driven by Alan Johnson. Ralph Henneforth completed the top ten

finishing order.

The early stages of the Sportsman feature looked like we were going

to see a first time winner as Mike Trautschold grabbed the early lead and

began to open up an advantage over the field. Mike's strong run would

come to an end on lap six as he pilled to the infield with a locked brake

rotor which ended his strong run. Trautschold's misfortune turned out to

be the only break Ricky Rutt would need as he inherited the lead at that

point. Rutt narrowly avoided disaster on the ensuing restart as he and

Larry Hendershot got together. Rutt was able to gather up his car while

Hendershot spun, ending his threat for the victory. Rutt now had

sixteen year old rookie sensation Kevin Bates hot on his heels, but Rutt

made his many years of experience work to his advantage as he was able

to hold Bates off the rest of the way to pick up the win. Bates chased

him all the way before settling for a runner-up finish, yet another solid

effort for the young rookie driver. Buddy Altemose, Tom Laner Jr., and

Mike VanTassel completed the top five. Current Sportsman point leader

Joey Grammes earned a sixth place finish ahead of Craig Whitmoyer, Greg

Morgan, Jesse Kline and Larry Hendershot, who recovered from his early

race misfortune to salvage a top ten finish.

In Street Stock action it was Phil Retter piloting his Fluerer

Machine sponsored #44x to victory, the second triumph of the season for

the man known as "Racer X". Retter started deep in the field, but ran

down and passed race leader Brian Petrilak just prior to the halfway

point. Bill Price Jr. was also able to work past Petrilak but was not

able to make a run at Retter before the laps ran out. Price settled for

second with Brian Petrilak third. Jim Redner Jr. and David Luff

completed the top five. Sixth through tenth went to Pat Dufrfin, Neil

DiBlasi, Nick Petrilak, Ed Kudrako, and Adam Jones.

The Pure tock feature saw the closest finish of the season at Lake

Moc-A-Tek as the top three drivers crossed the finish line three abreast.

Track scorers ruled Floyd Schmidt the winner by the narrowest of margins

over Frank Bush and Kieth Villano, all of whom took the checkered flag

running three wide for the victory. Jon Walsh and Ron Blake completed

the top five running order. Gary Druhl, newcomer Todd Wismer, Jeff

Simko, Jared Hayes, and Gary Schoch completed the top ten.

Ralph Utter came home the winner of his third 250cc Micro Sprint

feature of the season. Utter grabbed the lead early and went on to

victory by a comfortable margin. Greg Stevens celebrated his sixteenth

birthday with a second place finish, taking that spot away from Geoff

Quackenbush on the final lap. Quackenbush, Eric Palmer, and Pat Potter

made up the remainder of the top five. Frank Venezia, Davie Franek, Rich

McKey, Darrell Cobb, and Stephanie Stevens made up the second half of the

top ten finishing order..
