GARY GRIFFIN, BUDDY ALTEMOSE, BILL PRICE JR., GARY SCHOCH AND STEPHANIE STEVENS WIN AT LAKE MOC-A-TEK

051102 -

The Lake Moc-A-Tek Speedway celebrated Mother's Day in style as the

evening's racing activities were sponsored by the Pepsi Cola, who

presented flowers to mothers entering the speedway on the eve of their

special day. Longtime Lake Moc-A-Tek veteran Gary Griffin picked up his

first win of the 2002 campaign in the 358 Modified feature while Buddy

Altemose picked up his first ever Lake Moc-A-Tek win in the Sportsman

ranks. Bill Price Jr. won his first of the season in Street Stock action

as did Gary Schoch in the Pure Stock division. Stephanie Stevens became

only the second female driver to win a feature at Lake Moc-A-Tek as she

took the win in the Micro Sprints. Ironically, the only other female

feature winner ever at the speedway, Mary Beth Coleman, was on hand to

witness Stevens' victory.

The early stages of the 358 Modified feature saw Alan Kellogg and

eventual winner Gary Griffin spend most of the race battling for the top

spot. The two swapped the lead back and forth several times, with

Griffin finally taking control of the event when Kellogg got tangled up

with an infield marker tire, ending his bid for victory. From there,

Griffin was home free as he blasted his South Side Bowl/Main Engines

sponsored Bicknell chassis to victory. John Leiby drove a strong race to

pick up the runner-up finish, his best ever run at Lake Moc-A-Tek. Phil

Recchio also had a career best finish in third while Dom Roselli and

Scott Frack rounded out the top five. Troy Weisenfluh, Joey Grammes, Tom

Oleski, Nick Barassi and Brian Cobb completed the top ten. The feature

was shortened to 20 laps from its scheduled 25 lap distance due to an

excessive number of caution flags.

The 20 lap Sportsman feature saw Buddy Altemose pick up his first

ever Lake Moc-A-Tek victory. In fact, the win was Altemose's first on

dirt after switching his emphasis from asphalt racing a couples of season

ago. Altemose controlled the majority of the event aboard his Weirich

Construction #03, holding off a late challenge from Rocky Rosetti to earn

the victory. Rosetti settled for a second place run aboard his Sharkey's

Fuels #35 while Ricky Rutt finished third. Tom Laner Jr. and rookie Mike

Loney completed the top five. Larry Hendershot finished sixth with Kevin

Bates, Alex Konopka, Tom Gervasi, and defending track champion Ralph Mele

completing the top ten.

The Street Stock feature also saw a driver pick up his first win of

the season as Bill Price Jr. drove his McGlynn's Auto sponsored #48 to

victory. Price survived a challenge from David Luff to bring his D & D

Outlaw chassis home for the win by a narrow margin over Luff and Grant

Hilfiger, who finished third. Greg Buchannon and Jerry VanTassel were

fourth and fifth respectively. Mark Morgan, Jim Sykes, Ed Kudrako, Adam

Jones, and Carl Heater made up the second half of the top ten.

The first time winners trend continued in the Pure Stock ranks as

Gary Schoch drove his #29 Ford Pinto to a convincing victory. Schoch and

Don Leepier battled for the top spot almost the entire race with Schoch

able to hold off Leepier for the win. Leepier settled for second with

Floyd Schmidt, Jim Balutis, and Eric Schmidt completing the top five.

Keith Villano, Franklin Bush, John Walsh, Buddy Piccolini, and Ray

Coliani crossing the line sixth through tenth respectively.

Stephanie Sevens picked up her first career victory at Lake

Moc-A-Tek as she drove her NAPA sponsored #20 to victory in the 250cc

Micro Sprint feature. Sevens passed her brother Greg to take over the

top spot, then held off a late charge from teenage sensation Davie Franek

to pick up what was a very popular feature win. Franek tried to make a

late run on Stevens, but Stephanie was too strong and she was able to

hold on for the win while Davie settled for second ahread of Greg

Stevens. Two time winner alreasy this season Terry Schaffer wound up

fourth with Eric Palmer fifth. Jason Frantz, Pat Potter, Mike Keppler,

Ralph Utter Jr., and Richie Drake completed the top ten.

Racing continues this Saturday night at Lake Moc-A-Tek with a full

five star racing card. The 358 Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks, Pure

Stocks, and 250cc Micro Sprints will all be on the card running a

complete show of qualifying events leading up to five big feature races.

It will be the Ray Schmidt Memorial Race, run in honor of longtime Lake

Moc-A-Tek official Ray Schmidt, who passed away prior to the start of the

2002 racing season. Racing gets underway promptly at 6 PM.

The Lake Moc-A-Tek Speedway is located just off PA Rte 590

approximately seven mile East of Hamlin, Pa. To get to the speedway,

take Exit 17 (Formerly Exit #5) off I-84 and go toward Hamlin. At the

stoplight, (Hamlin Corners), turn right onto Pa. Rte 590 and travel

approximately 7 miles. At the Lake Moc-A-Tek Speedway sign turn right

and follow the signs which lead right into the speedway's parking lot.
