Paine Destroys Field At Canandaigua
CANANDAIGUA, NY...DIRT Modified track points leader, Steve
Paine, from Waterloo, NY, picked up his seventh Canandaigua
Speedway feature in 2000 completely dominating the field. Paine
won by a full half lap over runner up Bob McCreadie. In Sportsman
action, Matt Sheppard, driving his Paine Motorsports Honeoye Auto
Parts number 9s won his fifth feature of the year at Canandaigua.
The Pro-stock main went to an elated Dan Weisner driving his
Shuttleworth Asphalt-Kimble-Advance Auto Parts Camaro. Two Street
stock features, the first rain delayed from last week, were won
by Richard Briggs and Frank Burnell.
The 35-lap DIRT Modified feature saw Chuck Bower, in his
Currier Plastics-Mier Tool TEO power into the lead and start to
distance himself from Bob McCreadie in his Kinney Drug Stores
Troyer. McCreadie, however, rebounded and shot back to catch
Bower, even pull along side of him on lap nine. Bower maintained
his lead as the yellow flew on lap 11 after Jeff Brownell looped
his car around in the third turn.
Bower maintained his lead on the restart over McCreadie,
Steve Paine, Tim Fuller, Tim McCreadie and Danny Johnson. The
yellow quickly was re-flown when Darryl Ruggles, driving a big
block on the evening, came to a halt in the first turn.
This time Bower had his hands full with Steve Paine, as
Paine had been able to pass McCreadie for the runner up spot on
lap 13. Bower was able to hold back Paine for one circuit. But
then Paine showed his dominance, blasting into the lead and
pulling away from the pack.
Paine proceeded to establish nearly a half lap lead over
Bower, who had his hands full in a fight for position with Bob
McCreadie, and Tim Fuller. On lap 30, Fuller puller off the
speedway surface, as did Vic Coffey, with a flat tire. McCreadie
was then able to pass Bower. On the final lap Charlie Donk also
got by Bower for position.
At the checkers it was Paine, by half a lap over McCreadie,
Donk, Bower and Danny Johnson.
The 20-lap Sportsman feature saw a great battle between Wade
Czymmek and Bob Henry Jr. at the front of the field for eight
laps. The original start had to be aborted after Rick VanNeil
looped in front of Joe Beyea, resulting in Beyea's car sitting
atop the VanNeil mount in the second turn.
A second attempt at the start was much better with Czymmek
taking the lead. Two more yellows followed. The first on lap
four, when rookie Dan St. Dennis spun to the inside of the fourth
turn. The second came on lap six when David Allen and Eldon Payne
Jr. spun out together in the first turn. At the front of the
field Czymmek and Henry Jr. were battling back and forth.
Finally on lap nine Matt Sheppard powered by the two leaders
and set off in a race by himself. Steve Gray broke free of the
field on lap eleven, but he could not close the gap between
himself and Sheppard.
Sheppard recorded his fifth win of the year at Canandaigua.
He was followed across the finish line by Gray, Henry Jr., John
Plumb and Czymmek.
With his grandparents in from Arizona, young Dan Weisner was
not about to give up the lead he held in the 20-lap Pro-stock
division easily. Weisner took the lead on the initial green over
Bobby Lutz, Zack Shove and Patrick Hobbs. Last week's feature
winner, Chad Homan, brought out the yellow on lap six when he
coasted to a stop in the fourth turn.
On the restart Phil Barone made things somewhat wild when he
hopped a wheel in the second turn and flew through the air,
landing on his wheels and proceeding without losing a beat. He
did however lose a number of positions in the process. One more
yellow, lap eight saw Scott Fremouw loop in the fourth turn.
Weisner was now holding off a pair of Monte Carlo 2000's in
the form of Steve Miller and Jim McGuigan. Tommy Barron, running
fourth in his Blair's Siding and Roofing Camaro, starting using
the high groove around the speedway with just five laps
remaining. He passed both Miller and McGuigan and took off to
challenge Weisner with three laps remaining. Barron continued to
rely on the top line around the track while Weisner remained in
the middle of the track. On the final lap Barron attempted to
pull along side of Weisner as they charged to the checkers, but
fell short by a couple of feet at the finish line. Weisner
claimed the win with Barron second. Steve Miller, McGuigan and
Lee Burnett rounded out the top five finishers.
Two Street Stock features were run. In the first race Nathan
Peckham took the early lead over Tim Burnell. Three yellows
slowed the race. On the initial green a multi-car pile up
occurred on the front straight which eliminated top points earner
Jared Labarge. The second yellow flew on lap two when Brian Lloyd
looped out in the third turn. The final yellow came on lap eight
when Leroy Lewis spun in the fourth turn making contact with the
retaining wall. This set up a dash to the checkers which was won
by Richard Briggs, aboard his Chevrolet Camaro. Tim Burnell
finished second followed by Mike Ferens, James Henry and Nathan
Peckham.
The second 10-lap feature saw outside pole sitter Frank
Burnell power into a commanding lead as the race went green-to-
checkers. James Henry rebounded to finished second followed by
Glen Peters, Jim Cologgi and John Rutkowski.
This Saturday, August 26, Canandaigua Speedway will feature
a full night of Four Star action as the Street Stocks, Pro-
Stocks, Sportsman and Modified try and lock up their respective
point races. Race time on Saturday will be at 7 p.m. sharp.
The final complete night of racing will be in two weeks,
September 2. The speedway then will remain closed for one week as
preparations are made for the final full fender frenzy, the Top
Gun One Shootout for Pro-stocks and Street Stocks on September
16.
