Brian Weaver Scores Penn Can Victory
Susquehanna, PA... After three straight rain-outs, Penn Can Speedway finally
got a beuatiful Friday night for the Pappy Beavan Memorial Races on Barnes
Kasson Hospital Night. The modified feature was a wild affair with Brian
Weaver of Conkin, New York comung home with the hard fought victory. In the
late model division DanStone of Thompson, Pennsylvania held of last wek’s
winner, Al Coy, for the win. Scott Conover of Dyden, New York got his first
ever Penn can win. Brian Decker of Binghamton took the pure stock feature
while Cory Fachini of Adams, Mas. took home the IMCA victory.
Dan Hineline and Rick Whitney lead the twenty seven car modified field to
the green flag to start the modified feature. The battles started shaping up
early as many drivers fought hard for position bring out several early
caution flags. When the racing settled down, Brian Weaver worked his way to
the lead early in the event.
By lap seven the battle for the lead had Weaver fighting off Rusty
Harrington, Kirk Horton, and storg running Garth Tonkin. A lap ten caution
brought the field back together. On the restart Weaver continued to show the
way with the field chasing. Al Rudalavage, who started the feature last, had
been on the move through the pack and moved into the top ten at this point
in the race.
Caution flew again on lap twenty two. As cars slowed at the start finish
line the cars of Mike Colsten, Garth Tonkins and Kirk Horton made contact
with the stopped Al Kellogg machine. This ended Tonkin’s great ride and sent
Colsten to the pits with a flat. When racing resumed the battle was now for
the top position between Weaver, Horton, Rudalavage and Randy Decker now
challenging. Weaver held off Horton for his first win of the young season.
Horton came home second followed across by Rudalavage, Decker and Butch
Tittle. The remainder of the top ten included Tom McGurren, Rusty
Harrington, Mike Schane, Rick Whitney, and Harry Marvin,Jr.
The late model feature was another excellent display of racing on the
fast Penn Can oval. Last week Dan Stone had bad luck with mechanical
failure. This week he made sure everything was bolted on straight as he
vaulted from the pole and didn’t look back in a feature that saw only one
caution flag on lap thirteen. Stone’s closest competitor was Al Coy who was
the last event winner. Coy had to bring his car through the pack to
challenge Stone. The battle between Coy, Billy Marvin, and Dave Passetti
made the race a good one. The three drivers disd all they could to catch
Stone but time ran out. Stone got his first win followed by Coy, Marvin,
Passetti, and Jim Sherman.
In the Beavan Memorial Street Stock feature Jamie Shea lead the field to
the green. Shea’s car looked untouchable early in the feature as he built up
a large lead. Caution flags on lap seven and ten kept the field close. Scott
Conover started twelveth on the field and steadily moved his car forward.
Conover grapped the second spot on the lap ten restart. Pete Gulick and Glen
Wilcox were also in position to race for the lead. Conover showed his
strength with a lap fourteen pass of Shea for the lead. Disaster struck Shea
two laps later when he spun in the turn bring out the final caution. Conover
held of Wilcox and Gulick for his first ever Penn Can victory. Wilcox got
second with Gulick third and Mike Decker fourth. Rich Keehle came home
fifith.
Jim Ortiz and Keith Wilkens lead the pure stock start Friday. Brian
Decker was the man on the move early as he came from his ninth starting
position to the lead by the third lap. Decker kept the lead over a stong
field of street stocks. A lap eight caution brought the field together.
Decker restarted first followed by Ortiz, Jeff Cleveland, and last week’s
winner Bill Hawkins. Decker stayed strong and went on to win his first ever
feature at Penn Can over Hawkins, Cleveland, and newcomer Bob Tyriw.
The IMCA feature started with John Thayer and Mike Stoddard bring the the
field to the green. Stoodard grabbed the early lead and looked very strong.
Other cars working their way through the field included Cory Fachini and Bob
Chapman. A lap seven restart brought Stoddard’s great run to an end with
mechanical failure giving the lead to Fachini. Fachini held on strong to get
his first win of the season at Penn Can. Chapman was second followed by last
event winner Mike Smith.
