BARKER CAPTURES "RUN-WHATCHA-BRUNG" MODIFIED EVENT AT FULTON
FULTON, NY..9/19/98.. John Barker, the 1998 Fulton track champion, bested a field of "wings and things" to win the Open Competition Modified event Saturday night at Fulton Speedway. Sportsman track champion Tony Buffa was victorious in his feature event, while Rick Breed took the Street Stock win. Mark Wallace got his first of the year in the Pure Stocks and Harvey Calkins Jr. took the win in the 4 Cylinder feature.
Roger Phelps, sporting a sprint car wing on his Big Block Modified, took the lead at the start of the 35-lap Modified feature event. Jim Phelps, also with a wing atop his car, moved into second early on. John Barker battled for third with Ted Lamb and Steve Hulsizer, while Tom Kinsella, who started back in the 22nd position, was working his way through the field.
Barker caught the high flying Phelps machines, first passing Jimmy before halfway, then blasting up into a torrid side by side duel with the "Baldwinsville Bullet." Barker finally completed the pass on the inside of the speedway as the race approached the two-thirds mark. While Jimmy Phelps and Lamb fell by the wayside with mechanical problems, Kinsella moved into the top five and had a heated battle with Hulsizer for third.
Two late race yellows bunched the field, allowing Phelps to close in on Barker, but the Fulton 358 Modified track champion held off the challenges to record the feature win over Phelps, Kinsella, Hulsizer, and Chris Bushnell. Modified heats were won by Scott Prentice, Roger Phelps, and Lamb.
The 20-lap Sportsman feature event was all Tony Buffa, as he took the lead and led right to the checkered flag. Ron Richardson, who started alongside Buffa, held the second spot through most of the feature event, losing it only once briefly to Todd Henders!
on. An early race tangle involved several top contenders, who had to make their way back from the rear, but that was a great help to Bill Shantel, who had to qualify through the consi. Shantel came up strong to challenge Richardson as the race neared its conclusion.
At the checkers, Buffa had a commanding win over Richardson, followed by John Kinsella, Shantel, and Tony Ross. Sportsman heats were won by Buffa, Richardson, and Henderson, with Shantel winning the consolation race.
The Street Stock feature event was a wild affair that began with a terrific battle for the lead between Dave Moyer, Rich Keller, and John Petrowicz. Keller held the lead through the halfway point, with Petrowicz and Moyer moving in behind him as the race hit half distance. Off a lap 11 restart, the battle continued until Keller and Petrowicz tangled while racing for the lead, with Moyer getting caught up in the crash. Rick Breed, who had arrived late to the speedway after running in a race at Canandaigua earlier in the day, inherited the lead under the ensuing caution. In the final laps, Bill Shantel Jr. closed in to challenge Breed, but soon had his hands full with Brian Michels, who had been running near the front all race long.
At the finish, Breed had his first Street Stock feature win of 1998 at Fulton, with Shantel and Michels holding second and third. Ray Maloney and Gerry Newman took fourth and fifth. Street Stock heats were won by J.B. Dockstader, Keller, and TJ Fitzgibbons, with the consolation race going to Rich Murtaugh.
The Pure Stock feature event was a race long battle between Mark Wallace and Jeff Pastorella, with both drivers using the high and low lanes in some great side by side racing. Wallace eventually used the low lane to grab the lead from Pastorella, and he held it to the finish for his first win of '98 at Fulton. Dave Arbes got by Pastorella for second, with eighteen year old Eric Van Sciver beating Rick Dote to the line by a bumper for the fourth spot. Pure Stock heats were won by Pastorella, Wallace, and Da!
rryl Krebs, with the consi going to Kevin Raymond.
The 4 Cylinders made their first appearance of 1998 at Fulton, and Harvey Calkins Jr. celebrated his return from his honeymoon with a victory over Brewerton 4 Cylinder champ Lloyd Hinton, Ken Klinkowsky, Chuck Powelczyk, and Russ Cusson. 4 Cylinder heats were won by Calkins and Powelczyk.
