MICHAELS GRABS FIRST FULTON WIN OF 1998
FULTON, NY..9/5/98...J.J. Michaels prevailed after several laps of side by side racing for the lead with Jimmy Phelps to grab the win in Saturday night's Modified feature at Fulton Speedway. Bill Shantel Sr. took his first win of the year in the Sportsman, while!
John Petrowicz and Lou Levea were repeat winners in the Street Stocks and Pure Stocks.
Michaels started the Modified feature from the eighth spot, and moved in to contention on lap 10. Jimmy Phelps, the race leader, was running the low groove, so Michaels went to the high lane and ran several laps side by side with Phelps in a thrilling batt!
le. On lap 17, Michaels adjusted his lane slightly and took the lead from Phelps. Behind them, John Barker was holding the third spot, withstanding challenges from Bill Abold and Mitch Gibbs.
When the white flag waved, Phelps pulled up high in turn one after a quick flameup under his car. On the last lap shootout, Michaels held the lead while everyone else battled furiously for second. At the line Michaels had his first win of 1998, followed b!
y Barker and Gibbs. Abold and Jim Rothwell rounded out the top five. Modified heats were won by Michaels, Abold, and Billy Wilcox.
Bill Shantel took the lead at the start of the 20-lap Sportsman feature event and was never seriously challenged for the top spot. Former winner Tony Buffa had a tough night end in a multi car pileup on lap 3 that sent him into the first turn wall, and oth!
er contenders like Willy Decker and Dan Vail were left to battle amongst themselves as Shantel stretched out his advantage. When the checkers flew it was the first win of 1998 for Shantel at Fulton, with Tim Mayne holding off Dan Vail for second. Ron Davi!
s moved strongly through the field to take the fourth spot with Dale Darling finishing fifth. Sportsman heats were won by Shantel, Mayne, and Dave VanArsdale.
The 20-lap Street Stock feature saw Todd Gloska hold the early lead, only to lose it to Bill Shantel Jr. on lap 4. John Petrowicz was moving up to the top five from his mid pack starting spot using the outside lane, and battled Shantel for the lead, taking!
it on a lap 9 restart. While Petrowicz moved into the lead, a wild battle ensued for the rest of the top five spots with Dave Moyer, Rick Breed, and Bill Schirabba moving in to fight with Shantel for position. Petrowicz was not seriously challenged and t!
ook another win, followed by Moyer, Schirabba, Shantel, and Breed. Street Stock heats were won by Moyer, Ron Root, and Herm Flowers, with the consolation taken by Rich Keller.
The 15-lap Pure Stock feature was led early by Paul Mercier, who held on until Mark Wallace moved in to challenge him on lap 11. One lap later, the two made contact while racing for the lead, breaking the front end on the Wallace car and flattening a tire !
on the Mercier machine. That left Kevin Raymond up front, but on the ensuing caution, he pulled off, which left Lou Levea in the lead. Despite occasional flame ups and smoke coming from the Levea machine, he held off Todd Storace to score his second Pure !
Stock win in a row. Storace, Dave Mannise, Ken Wentworth, and John Eiss rounded out the top five. Pure Stock heats were won by Raymond and David Bock.
This Saturday night the Fulton Speedway will feature a regular show of Small Block Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks, and Pure Stocks. Gates open at 5pm with racing starting at 7pm.
