PHELPS CAPTURES FIRST WIN AT FULTON IN 1998

FULTON, NY...8/29/98....Roger Phelps battled with Bill Abold and finally took over the lead for good at the halfway point to capture his first win of 1998 at Fulton Speedway in the Modified feature event. In the Sportsman ranks, Ron Richardson dominated the field for his third win of the year, while Jerry Holmes grabbed his first win of the year in the Street Stocks, and Lou Levea celebrated his birthday with a win in the Pure Stocks.

Dave Reilly led the first lap of the Modified feature event, but Roger Phelps came up to steal the lead on lap 2. By lap 10, Bill Abold had moved into the second spot and started hounding Phelps for the lead. Further back, last week's winner Mitch Gibbs and J.J. Michaels were coming up through the field. Doug Fuller and John Barker were having a wild battle for position behind the lead duo.

Abold actually took the lead for a few laps, but over the course of two restarts, Phelps had a resurgence and moved back into the lead and extended it to the finish for a popular win. Abold held a strong second spot at the checkers, followed by Barker, Gibbs, and Doug Fuller. Modified heats were won by Abold, Jim Rothwell, and Steve Hulsizer, with Michaels grabbing the consi win.

The 20-lap Sportsman feature event was dominated by Ron Richardson, who moved out in front on the first lap and held the lead right to the checkers. Two time winner Tony Buffa had trouble in the first couple of laps, getting involved in two separate incidents on the track. Behind Richardson, there was a great battle for position between Jeremy Pitcher and several other drivers. Dan Vail and Greg Doust were in the mix the entire race, with Pitcher and Doust running several laps side by side.

At the finish, Richardson had his third win of 1998, followed by Pitcher and Doust. Vail was fourth and Greg Carner rounded out the top five. Sportsman heats were won by Vail, Richardson, and Bill Shantel.

The 20-lap Street Stock feature saw Howie Koegel grab the early lead until he slid high on the track on lap 8. That allowed Rich Keller to jump up into the lead, while Jerry Holmes and Dave Moyer in the thick of battle for the second spot. Just past halfway, Keller slid high on the track and Holmes and Moyer darted by. They carried their battle for the lead to the finish, with Holmes hanging on by a couple of car lengths to get his first ever win at Fulton. Moyer was a close second followed by Keller, Joe Jackson, and Mike Cooper. Street Stock heats were won by Koegel, Moyer, and Bill Shantel Jr., with Ricky Breed earning the consi win.

The 15-lap Pure Stock feature was a two car battle early between Dave Mannise and leader Lou Levea until Mannise broke on lap 10. Todd Storace moved into the second spot and hounded Levea, but he was not to be denied as he won the feature event, and celebrated his birthday in victory lane along with the win. Storace was second, followed by Jeff Pastorella, Paul Mercier, and Joe Buske. Pure Stock heats were won by Mercier and Levea.

Next Saturday night, Magee Trailer Sales presents UWA Ringmasters Wrestling beginning at 5:30pm, followed by a regular show of Small Block Modifieds, Sportsman, Street Stocks, and Pure Stocks at 7pm.
