PLANCK, HALL, CAPRARA, STEVENSON, EISELE AND SHARP GRAB CAN-AM WINS
LAFARGEVILLE NY: With just two point races remaining in 1998 the action in all six regular divisions was heating up at the fast 1/2 mile oval, the Can-Am Speedway. Joining the regular show this past Saturday night was the final event in the Summer Enduro Series. The night activities were sponsored by the Golden Image Sun Center.
Scott Parliament and Jeff Sykes brough a small feild of only 15 358 DIRT Modifieds to the green flag and it was Sykes shown as the leader of lap 1. The 25 lap event would only be slowed by one caution on lap 16 which made geting to th front difficult. Sykes was looking for his second win of the year but on lap 9 Dale Planck made his way to the front and powered past Sykes for the lead. The caution slowed the pack and tightened everyone back together but Planck was flying and went on for his second win of the season at Can-Am. Sykes had a good run coming across in second followed by Pat O'Brien, Todd Stewart and George McIntyre.
The DIRT Sportsman took to the track for their 15 feature and Matt Butler sat on the pole position. Larry Lamb has been very quick during the month of August and took the top spot early in the race. Lamb can't seem to get that break he needs to pick up a win but looked very strong on this night holding the lead until lap 9 when Steve Hall made his move around the outside and into the lead. Hall went on for the win over Mike Clark, Rich Hall, Lamb and Dave Surace.
The 12 lap IMCA Modified feature saw Kevin Chant and John Bell bring the starters to the green but it was Cory Fachini who came from his 4th starting position to take the lead on lap1. Fachini opened up a comfortable lead but on lap 8 actually spun coming off of turn 4 allowing Frank Caprara to catch up. Faching never lost his momentum and continued on in second place. A couple of late race yellows kept everyone together but it was Caprara cruising to the win over Fachini, Neal Edger, Ron O'Niel and Eddie O'Niel.
The Late Model division is in its final week of competition at Can-Am and this week it was Richard Stevenson and Scott Kelsey on the front row. Kelsey took over the lead early with Scott Gates in second. Wayne Side took over on lap 6 but as they came off of turn 4 on lap 8 contact was made between Side and Kelsey sending Side hard into the wall. Kelsey was put to the rear for the incident handing the lead over to Murray Walts. Kelsey made his way back to the front on the final lap but again contact was made with the leader in turn one. Richard Stevenson was awarded the win over Dale Hale, Walts, Ron McConnell and Side.
Brian Rogers and Doug Murphy were on the front row for the 12 lap Street Stock feature but Bill Eisele grabbed the lead on lap 1. This 12 lap event would also see only one yellow so those in the back of the pack had to race hard to get to the front. Al Pitts made his way to second on lap 3 with Dave Keefer also making his way into the top 3 by lap 7. The top three ran bumper to bumper over the final 5 lap of the feaurevent with Eisele grabbing the win, Pitts was second followed by Keefer, Rogers and Steve Rookey.
The 10 lap Economy Stock feature had a great feild of 21 cars take the green with George Sanford taking the lead on lap 1. The only yellow of this event came on lap 2 and on the restart Sanford continued to show the way. The Economy Stocks have been putting on a excellent show for the fans every week in 1998 and this week waas no different as they used the entire race track surface. Kyle Sharp made his way from starting position number 14 and stole the lead away from Sanford on lap 7. Sharp went on for the win with Sanford, Ken Partridge, Ernie Taylor and Rick Dusckas completing the top 5.
Summer Enduro Series Event #3 was also on the schedule and 43 cars showed up to compete in the final Enduro of the season at Can-Am. It was a wild affair that had the red flag displayed twice in the 30 lap race. The first red was for a car fire in turn three that quickly put out by rescue crews and the other was for a hard crash on the front straightaway involving Dog Ada, the winner of Summer Enduro Series Event #1. Doug did walk to the ambulance but was taken to a Watertown Hospital for treatment. Shawn LaClair picked up the $500 win over Gary Chant and Jeff Shannon.
Next Saturday night will be the final night of points for all divisions except the IMCA Modifieds. Racing will be sponsored by Standard Auto Parts and Fastlube of Watertown/Kendall Motor Oil. Gates will open at 5:00 with first race getting the green flag at 7:00. For more information call the speedway at (315)658-4431 or look us up on the internet at www.can-amspeedway.com.
