Brett Hearn Picks Up Skoal 358 Win At Can-Am
LAFARGEVILLE NY: 8/27/98..The annual Skoal Super DIRT Series for 358 DIRT Modifieds came to Upstate New York this past Thursday night and over 30 of the top DIRT stars were on hand to compete on the fast 1/2 mile clay oval at the Can-Am Speedway. Joining the 358 DIRT Modifieds were the Economy Stocks and both divisions put on a great show for the fans on Budweiser and Best Distributing night.
The 98 Skoal Super DIRT Series event was brought to the line by Can-Am regular Pat O'Brein and Pete Bicknell. Bicknell, making his only start of the year at Can-Am grabbed the lead at the drop of the green while O'Brien settles into the second spot. A couple of yellows early slowed the event but Bicknell remained in control. Former Can-Am regular Tim Fuller made his way into the second position on lap 12 but lasted only 4 laps when Tim McCreadie came from the 14th starting spot to take over the runner up position. McCreadie chased Bicknell throughout the middle portion of the event but could not seem to gain ground until Bicknell got caught up in lap traffic. McCreadie used the lap cars to his advantage and on lap 64 and made his move for the lead stick. At the 75 lap mark it was McCreadie followed by Brett Hearn, Bicknell, Tim Fuller and Danny O'Brien. Hearn began to pull in on McCreadie and by lap 80 was side by side for the lead but Hearn went wide in turn 1 allowing Bicknell to move back up to second. The final 10 laps of this Skoal Super DIRT Series event will be talked about for a long time. Hearn made his way back to second on lap 88 and slowly closed in on McCreadie for the second time. With the white flag waving Hearn was able to draw alongside of McCreadie on the high side of turn 3 and the came to the checkered just inches apart. Hearn lead the final 200 feet of the 98 lap affair to steal the win away. McCreadie was second followed by Bicknell, Fuller and Alan Johnson.
The exciting Economy Stocks took to the speedway for their 15 lap special with George Sanford and Steve Gilmore leading the field of 20 cars. Sanford took the early lead with Joseph Combs moving into second on lap 1. Jeff Hunter came from his 4th starting posiiton to take over the lead on lap 3 while Rick Dusckas and Kyle Sharp made their way to the front. Only one caution slowed the event and Hunter looked like he was on his way to his first win of the season but on lap 10 Kyle Sharp moved around Hunter and into the lead. Sharp has been the man to beat lately at Can-Am and picked up another win over Hunter, Sanford, Dusckas and Kevin Presely.
