BAREFOOT BACK IN BREWERTON VICTORY LANE

BREWERTON, NY..8/7/98..."Barefoot" Bob McCreadie returned to victory lane for the fourth time in 1998 on Team Services night at Brewerton Speedway. Frank Caprara scored his second win of the year in the IMCA Modifieds, Jim Olin got the win in the 4 Cylinders, and Troy Van Allen grabbed his tenth win in thirteen stars at Brewerton this year.

McCreadie started the 35-lap DIRT Modified feature event in the eighth spot and began working his way up quickly. Roger Phelps and Lance Petzoldt battled for the early lead, but McCreadie was tearing up the track on the outside and moved into the lead by the tenth lap. Further back, Alan Johnson and Pat Ward were in a heavy battle with Dale Planck and Bobby Varin while Billy Decker was moving up from his eighteenth starting spot.

Once McCreadie got the lead he was never seriously challenged, but there was a terrific battle behind him for second with Phelps and Ray Bliss going side by side for several laps. Steve Hulsizer joined the fight with Alan. Decker and Ward all looking for racing room. At the checkers McCreadie cruised home for the win over Ward, who grabbed second late in the race. Bliss had a fine third place finish, followed by Hulsizer and Alan Johnson. Phelps took sixth followed by Decker, Planck, Danny Johnson, and Varin. Modified heats were won by Phelps, Scott Prentice, and McCreadie.

The 20-lap IMCA Modified feature saw Frank Caprara squeak into the lead early, but by no means was the race over. After several competitors tangled on the opening green flag lap, the race settled into a battle between Caprara and Bob Bradt. Bradt spun after contact on a restart, which moved George Catanzano into second. Cory Fachini also moved up, and used slower traffic to pass Catanzano late in the race for the runnerup spot. Sean Lias worked his way up from the back of the pack to come to fourth at the!

flag with Les Hubbard turning in another good run to take the fifth spot. IMCA Modified heats were won by Dick Weiland, Rob Keller, and Bradt.

The Dwarf car event was an exciting race slowed only once by a yellow flag over its 20-lap distance. Troy Van Allen once again showed his dominance in this class by moving up through the pack to take the lead by lap 12, but he did not pull out a big lead. Eric Crawford stayed with Van Allen through the remaining laps of the feature, challenging him on occasion. As the race entered its final two laps, Van Allen held a solid lead and carried it to the finish for his tenth win of 1998 at Brewerton. Crawford held on to second over Kevin Doll, the early race leader. Jim Grey and Pat Pontello took fourth and fifth. Dwarf car heats were won by Crawford, Van Allen, and Mark Weigelt.

The 4 Cylinder feature was a fantastic fight between Jim Olin, multi-time winner Lloyd Hinton, and Ed Granoski. The three battled in and out of traffic and through numerous restarts, but Olin drove a smart race to record the feature win. Granoski was right behind Olin at the flag, with Hinton adding to his points lead with a third place finish. Chris Carroll and Ken Klinkowsky took fourth and fifth. 4 Cylinder heats were won by John Clark, Olin, and Carroll.

In other racing activities, David Gruel won the Youth Dwarf feature and Jim Lowe won the 1-on-1 Spectator Races. Special Dashes for Cash were held for the 4 Cylinders, sponsored by Team Services and Specialty Tire. Carroll and Mark Warner each took $100 paydays for their wins in those events.

Next Friday night, School Bus Races are the added attraction at Brewerton, along with a regular show of DIRT Modifieds, IMCA Modifieds, 4 Cylinders and Dwarf cars. Gates open at 5:30pm with racing starting at 7:30pm.
