Third win for Kramer Williamson at Granby
WITH HIS FOURTH VICTORY, DAVE CAMARA
DIDN’T HIDE HIS INTENTIONS
GRANBY, Qué., July 26, 1998-- This season, American driver Dave Camara of Poultney Vermont has for goal to win the Molson championship in the modified division at Autodrome Granby. Last Friday, Camara didn’t hide his intentions by winning his fourth feature of the season. That night was marked by the sole visit of the URC’s sprint cars and Kramer Williamson didn’t disappoint his fans by claiming his third success at Granby.
At the start of this 30-lap feature in the modified division, Steve Poirier who was second on the starting grid took the early lead in front of Marco Potvin and Pierre Hébert. Then on lap 8, at the occasion of a restart, Camara who had managed to climb in third place, was able to pass Potvin to find himself just on the back bumper of Poirier. Poirier was able to save his position till lap 14 when he gave the chance to Camara to pass him.
Despite four more yellow flags, Camara was never upset by the opposition, but there was a good battle for the second spot between Poirier and Potvin till lap 18, when Poirier was forced to make an unscheduled pit stop due to a flat tire. Then Gino Clair and Robert Ranger tried to take Potvin but without any success. Again Poirier showed his great skill to take the third spot behind Potvin with three laps remaining.
Winner last week, Alain Boisvert was plagued by mechanical problems and had to quit on lap 26, just a few seconds after Luke Plante’s retirement for the same reason.
Eariier in the evening, Steve Poirier and Dominic Dufault were the winners in their respective heats.
Always spectacular
Always spectacular at Autodrome Granby, Kramer Williamson became the first URC’S sprint car driver to register a hat trick. Williamson who claimed his 54th victory in career, again demonstrated his great skill.
Twelth at the start, Williamson was able to make it in heavy traffic to find himself second behind Rick Koenig, the leader from the start of this 25-lap feature. Two laps later, Koenig couldn’t resist any longer to Williamson but managed to finish second in front of Jeremy Strout.
Till lap 25, Greg Coverdale had a strong second place finish but a broken suspension and a flat tire forced him to withdraw.
In the sportsman division, Gerry Patenaude, the defending champion, was able to make a comeback in the winner’s circle. It was his third win of the season. He led the entire 20 laps to have the best on Robin David and Alain Mathieu. For the fifth time this season, Marcel Bélanger was the winner in the late models class.
