Hearn Takes Fifth Win of Season, Marcus Wins Barn Burner
July 25, 1998
WEST LEBANON, NY- Brett Hearn won the 30-lap modified feature Saturday night
at Lebanon Valley, it was his fifth win of the season at Lebanon Valley.
George Marcus picked up the 20-lap sportsman win. Henry Tanner won the 20-lap
street stock feature. Farrell Oil sponsored the night's competition.
Brett Hearn used his fifth place starting spot to his advantage by taking the
lead on lap two from Steve Devine. Todd Wilkinson would spin on lap four
bringing out the second caution on the event. Guy Sheldon and Kenny Tremont
raced for the fourth spot on lap five, with Tremont taking the spot from
Sheldon. Tremont would take second on a lap six restart.
Chris Moore and Dickie Larkin both had good runs in the modified feature. The
two would battle for third on lap seven. Larkin held the third spot until a
lap seven restart, which allowed Moore to get the position. Rich Ricci would
hold steady in the top ten. He was seventh on lap nine. Dave Leckonby got the
seventh spot from Ricci on the next lap.
Meanwhile at the head of the pack Hearn and Tremont checked out. Hearn held a
two or three car advantage through most of the event. Hearn had more
horsepower on the straightaway and Tremont would close in the corners. Lapped
traffic looked like it may play a factor in the event, but both drivers got
through the traffic cleanly. In the closing stages of the race the leaders
would again encounter some heavy traffic. Hearn was able to hold off Tremont
and take home the victory. Hearn was happy with the win. Hearn has not had
very good luck the past few weeks at Lebanon Valley and now has broken that
string of bad finishes.
Tremont did take the runner-up spot and still has the point lead. Chris Moore
ended a string of bad luck with a third place performance. Dickie Larkin also
had a good run coming home fourth. Another good top five finish for J.R.
Heffner. Heffner currently sits third in the modified point standings.
It was a barnburner of a race in the 20-lap sportsman feature. Roy Bridge
held the early advantage with K.C. Goewey second and Frank Harper third.
Contact between Art Collins and Bob Hackel would end Hackel's night on lap
three. Collins would go to the rear for his role in the incident. Chris Kokosa
would grab third on the restart. Ron Blake moved up to the fourth position on
a lap six restart. Kokosa would battle Goewey for second on lap six. Kokosa
took second on lap seven. Goewey's good run would end on laps seven with
mechanical problems.
George Marcus moved up to fourth by lap eight and Bobby Chalmers took fifth.
Blake would lose several spots on lap seven. Collins was moving back through
the pack and was seventh on lap ten. Bridge and Kokosa would pull away from
the field by lap eleven. Kokosa would challenge for the lead on a lap 12
restart. The race got real interesting in the final stages. Bridge, Kokosa and
Marcus went three wide for the top spot on lap 17. Marcus would take first on
lap 18. Kokosa took second on the same lap.
Marcus would take his second win of the year, with Kokosa second, Bridge
third, Blake fourth and Bobby Chalmers fifth.
T.R. Bortle led the field down for the start of the 20-lap street stock
feature. Scott Goversten would end his night early after a lap four incident.
Lorne Browe took third on the restart. Browe was second by lap seven. John
Routhier would move up to third on lap eight. Routhier would go pitside on lap
nine, but would return without losing a lap.
Browe would take the lead on lap ten. Blackburn and Henry Tanner raced
for
fourth on lap 11. Tanner would move up to third on lap 13 and take second on
lap 14. Tanner would set his sights on the first place car of Browe. Tanner
began to catch Browe with five laps remaining. Tanner would catch Browe and
take the lead on lap 17. This was Tanner's second win in two weeks at Lebanon
Valley.
The 15-lap IMCA modified feature was won by Kevin Priest from Pattersonville,
NY, it was his first career victory.
