BOBBY VARIN TOPS FIELD AT "LAND OF LEGENDS"

CANANDAIGUA, NY..7/11/98....Bobby Varin, from Sharon Springs, NY, coaxed his number 18 Tobias chassis DIRT Modified into victory lane last Saturday on a somewhat slick track. Topping the Sportsman feature was Lance Dusett. Bobby Lutz won the 15-lap Street Stock main while Leroy Lewis took top honors in the Entry Stock division.

Bryon Turner and Scott Boudinot brought the 21 car field down to take the green flag, with Turner able to power into the front spot. As a long green period began, running full throttle until a yellow on lap 13, Turner was able to stretch out nearly a fifteen car advantage over the field. Gil Tegg Jr. took second on the second lap of the race and maintained his spot until the lap 14 restart.

The yellow flew on lap 13 when Jim Burke, being lapped on the speedway, looped his car on the front straight, amazingly he stayed out of the racing groove and hit nothing. Burke, however, retired to the pits.

Turner maintained his advantage on the restart, but now Steve Paine was in second followed by Danny Johnson, Gary Tomkins and Billy Decker.

The second yellow of the race came on lap 20 when Bob McCreadie and John Moravec tangled in the third turn, just as Billy Decker took second from Paine. Paine retook the second spot on the restart, but immediately lost the spot back to Decker on the next circuit.

Gary Tomkins blew past both Paine, Decker and Turner on lap 23 restart, staged due to a spin in the fourth turn by returning veteran Darryl Ruggles. Tomkins would maintain this lead until a lap 31 yellow, for sheet metal in the groove in three, slowed and bunched the field together. The restart saw Bobby Varin leap by both Paine and Tomkins to claim the lead.

At the finish line it would Varin followed by Paine, Turner, Tomkins and Pat Ward.

"I want to thank the Lord for those last few laps," stated a jubilant Varin in victory lane. "I also want to thank Richie (Tobias) for all of his help with our chassis set ups. These Tobias cars work well on a slick speedway."

The 20-lap sportsman feature saw Lance Dusett lead the entire distance, starting on the pole. Dusett was hounded in the closing stages of the race by Mike Button.

Three cautions slowed the pace of the race. The first yellow flew on lap two when Wade Czymmek looped his car on the front stretch. The second yellow saw Chris Ridsdale tap the inside wall in the second turn, tearing his left front tire off the car. Czymmek, with no place to go, was launched over this tire straight into the air. Both cars were done for the night.

The final yellow flew when Howie Albrecht, running third, had a left rear tire go flat. He changed the tire but immediately returned to the pits out of the race.

Dusett took the victory followed by Button, Jerry Haers Jr., Vince Vitale and Todd Henderson.

The 15-lap Street Stock feature saw two early yellows fly. First, Phil Barone and Jim Burba slammed head on into the fourth turn wall on the first lap. Both drivers were uninjured but shaken. The second yellow came one lap later when Randy Miller grazed the outside wall and looped back into traffic in the third turn. The Miller car was heavily damaged, but Randy proved to be uninjured. During this yellow, leader Steve Pesarek exited to the pits leaving Dave VanArsdale in the front spot.

Bobby Lutz was then able to pass Dave VanArsdale on the restart and drove away to hide. VanArsdale, fighting a loose condition, dropped back behind Les Whyte, to finish third. Rick Miller came home in fourth followed by Ron Lawson Jr. in fifth.

"It a great birthday present," stated Lutz from victory lane where he was helping to celebrate his 62nd birthday.

The Entry Stock main event came down to the final lap, as former winner Frank Burnell Sr. was leading the field. Burnell came together with second place runner Mike Archer and was disqualified by the starter for rough riding. LeRoy Lewis took the lead on the final lap, avoiding the accident in the fourth turn to claim the victory.

This Saturday will be Senior Citizen's Night hosted by Pick-n-Pull Auto Parts. A full card of regular Saturday night racing will be on hand. Race time will be at 7 p.m., with gates opening at 5 p.m. sharp.
