Hebing Takes First Canandaigua Win Of The Season

CANANDAIGUA, NY.7/18/98..Rochester, New York's Chuck Hebing claimed his first DIRT feature victory of the year, winning the 35-lap main event last Saturday evening on Pick-N-Pull Auto Parts night at the speedway. Also winning features last Saturday were Vince Vitale claiming his third sportsman main of the year at Canandaigua, Tom Barron winning his sixth Street Stock main event and Tim Hettig winning the Entry Stock division's feature

Scott Schrader in his Denny's Restaurant number 58 and John Moravec aboard the Scott Boudinot regular ride, due to blown motors in his own number 6 ride, brought the 25 car field down to the green flag. As the cars passed the start finish line Jim Burke made contact with the outside retaining wall causing the yellow to fly. The second attempt at starting the 35-lap feature saw Hebing, jump from his third starting spot, into the lead followed by Schrader, Tim Fuller and Jimmy Phelps.

The yellow flew a second time when Steve Paine made heavy contact with the Ray Bliss Jr. machine, sending Bliss to the pits. On lap five the third yellow flew when Darryl Ruggles and John Ventura slowed on the track.

Hebing maintained his advantage, stretching out his lead to almost a full straight away over Fuller, Bob McCreadie and Billy Decker, who had all now moved into the top five.

On lap eight, Scott Schrader slowed to a stop in the first turn causing a yellow.

Two late race yellows, one on lap 27 for Pat Ward who broke a bracket on his car, stopping in the third turn, and lap 29 when Steve Lead spun in the second turn.

Hebing continued to hold off all comers, finishing with a $1,700 pay day in first. Fuller finished second with Billy Decker claiming fourth Bob McCreadie finished fifth followed by Bryon Turner, Jimmy Phelps, and Danny Johnson.

In sportsman action only 19 cars took the green flag, but again yellow flag fever was the call of the evening. On lap three debris on the front stretch caused the yellow to be displayed. One lap later, lap four, the red flag was displayed after a four car tangle in the second turn involving; Russ Lyons, Steve Oplinger, Steve Gray and Jerry Haers Jr..

As the race looked to be under way again the yellow flew on lap six when Wade Czymmek slowed to a stop on the speedway.

As for the racing action Tim Johnson lead the race until lap 14, a restart, when Vince Vitale was able to grab the lead.

Johnson finish third, behind Mike Button who grabbed the runner up spot on the final lap. Tim Johnson came home in third followed by Lance Dusett and a close fifth for Randy Holden, "nerfing" out Paul Guererri for fifth.

Tom Barron took command of the 15-lap Street Stock feature from Steve Pesarek on lap seven and led the rest of the laps. Only one yellow flag slowed the race, that coming on lap 12, when Randy Miller slowed with a flat right rear tire. During this break, last week's winner Bobby Lutz was also forced to pit with a flat left rear tire, while running third.

Barron took the victory followed by Pesarek, Les Whyte, Scott Fremouw and Lee Burnett.

This Saturday will see a complete program of DIRT Modified, Sportsman, Street Stock and Entry Stocks, with the addition of racing Buses. Race time will be at 7 p.m., with gates opening at 5 p.m..
