BAREFOOT BOB MAKES IT TWO FOR TWO AT THE BREWERTON OPENER

BREWERTON, NY. . ..5/1/98....Bob McCreadie kicked off Brewerton Speedway's season opening DIRT

modified season by scoring two sensational feature race victories.

In the rain delayed 50-lap season opener, scheduled four weeks ago, McCreadie couldn't

take the lead until the 41st lap, when early leader Chuck Bower, who had McCreadie beat,

slipped in holes in the track. That gave McCreadie an edge and he took it passing Bower for the lead and the $2,000 victory.

McCreadie, the defending and four-time Brewerton track champion, had to work for his

second win in the track's regular 35-lap modified race. Starting 17th in the 22-car field,

McCreadie methodically worked his way to the front until he was behind race leader Billy Decker.

Twice in the final six laps McCreadie drew a beat on Decker but couldn't get past him.

But on the final lap McCreadie drew inside Decker as the pair raced off turn four and beat

Decker by virtual inches at the wire. The $1,500 victory gave McCreadie his third victory of the season in the four feature races he's won. He now leads DIRT's all-time

standings with 268 career victories.

The start of the 35-lap race was one of Brewerton Speedway's wildest. Chuck Hebing took

the early lead until Alan Johnson set his modified inside him on lap four. From then on the

two waged a torrid battle for the lead as both threw their cars fully broadside into the turns side by side. Yet neither driver allowed their car to touch the other.

Finally, Johnson got the best of Hebing taking the point on the 10th lap. However,

during a caution one lap later, Johnson drove his car slowly into the pits with suspected

engine failure. Next, Johnson's brother Danny was Hebing's next challenger and after some bumping Danny Johnson passed Hebing.

In last week's rained out 4-cylinder stock 15 lap feature race, Lloyd Hinton took the

lead and victory after early leader Ed Granowski whacked the grandstand straight wall while

rounding the fourth turn. Todd Williamson finished second, followed by Jim Olin. In the regularly scheduled 4 Cylinder feature event, Jim Olin took the lead near the

halfway point and stretched it out to capture his first win of 1998. Ed Granoski finished in

the second spot with Todd Williamson coming home in the third spot.

The IMCA Modified feature event saw George Cantazano grab the lead at the one third mark

of the 20 lap feature and withstand a final lap challenge from Shawn Lias to notch the

victory. Ron O'Neil was a close third.

The 20 lap ESDCA Dwarf car feature event saw Greg Furlong capture the early lead and

hold until a fast closing Dan Boyce slipped under him in turn one to capture the lead.

Furlong tried to hold on, but spun out of the top five while Troy Van Allen gave chase to Boyce. Van Allen could not catch the speedy Boyce who cruised home with the win over

Van Allen and Ed Bell, who nipped Jim Gray for third at the line.

Next Friday night the Brewerton Speedway hosts double features for IMCA Modifieds and

Dwarf cars plus a regular show for DIRT Modifieds and 4 Cylinders. Gates will open at 5:30pm

with the first event starting at 7:30pm.
