BAREFOOT BOB McCREADIE IS TOP DIRT "LEADFOOT"
WEEDSPORT, NY..4/26/98..."Barefoot" Bob McCreadie, who had just eight
DIRT feature wins in 1983 when Alan Johnson became DIRT's top
feature winner, took his 266th DIRT feature, winning Sunday at
Cayuga County, to move ahead of Alan Johnson becoming the top
DIRT feature winner of all-time. Steve Hall repeated his season
opening victory at Cayuga County from last season, winning for a
second year in a row. The 40-lap enduro was won by Dan Deline.
The 50-lap modified feature found Gary Tomkins and Brett
Hearn leading the 31 car field down to the green flag. Tomkins
was quick to take the lead, but by the end of the first lap Hearn
was the leader of record. Hearn held on until lap 12 when Tomkins
retook the top spot on a restart. Tomkins was only able to hold
the point for one circuit, when Hearn retook the lead.
On lap 22, the yellow flew when Gary Tomkins suffered a flat
left front tire and came to a stop on the track. Hearn remained
the leader but now he was doing battle with Bob McCreadie.
McCreadie fresh out of winter back surgery, took the lead with a
smooth low move through the third and fourth turns on lap 25.
From this point on the race was all McCreadie, as he maneuvered
through lapped traffic with ease. Hearn finished a distant
second, Joe Plazek in third, Alan Johnson and Danny Johnson in
fourth and fifth.
In the 20-lap Sportsman main event Steve Hall took the lead
from his pole starting spot and never looked back. He did have a
challenge from Jim Speno form most of the race. Speno's car was
damaged somewhat making contact with a lapped car on lap 14. This
contact threw off the handling in his car, allowing Hall to
cruise home to victory, his second sportsman season opener in a
row at Cayuga County.
Speno finished second followed by Mike Button, Rick Miller
and Rich Swarthout.
This Sunday racing will move to the Rolling Wheels Raceway
for the annual DIRT Challenge Cup event. Racing returns to Cayuga
County on May 24 for the annual Hall of Fame Classic. Race time
at Rolling Wheels will be at 2 pm, with gates opening at 11:30
am.
