BRIAN WEAVER WINS PENN CAN SPECIAL

SUSQUEHANNA, PA... Brian Weaver of Conklin, New York showed the crowd

why he is the 1997 Penn Can Speedway Champion by winning a fiercely

contested thirty five lap feature. This rare Saturday night show was a

tune up for the big Fall Foliage Finale by Pennzoil schedule for next

Saturday. The big fifty lap feature is a qualifying race for the Fulton

Victoria 200. In companion action, Eddie White made it two out of three

when he captured the sportsman feature. This was the third appearance

this season of the sportsman cars and White has won two. The sportsman

return next week for their Victoria weekend qualifier. In street stock

action, Glen Wilcox came out of the sixth starting position to win his

first feature at Penn Can in over two years. The pure stock race on

Binghamton Pepsi Cola Night was won by infrequent visitor Bill Cook.

By luck of the draw, Brian Weaver started the modified feature on the

pole. The twenty five car feild was filled with cars capable of getting

to the front to challenge Weaver. King of the Can winner Butch Tittle

was the first to put pressure on Weaver. In the early stages of the

feature Tittle tucked in on the bumper of Weaver and waited for Weaver

to make a mistake. At the same time Chuck Akulis, Mike Colsten, and Carl

Nagel all set sail toward the front of the field. A early caution

grouped the field together with Weaver being followed by Nagel, Tittle,

Colsten, and Akulis. Making a strong move from deep in the pack was the

high flying car of George Kostelansky. All eyes watched as he picked

cars off lap after lap. As the race wound to the finish Weaver held off

all challenges by Carl Nagel, driving his Thunder Mountain car, and Mike

Colsten. At the finish Weaver had one car lenghth on Nagel with Colsten,

Kostelnasky, and Tittle coming across under a blanket. Kirk Horton drove

a steady race and made a last lap pass on Akulis to get sixth followed

over the line by Akulis, Mike Nagel, Glen Knapp, and Jeff Rudalavage.

Chad Cook ran pure stocks at Penn Can Speedway one year ago. He

brought the Sportsman field to the green and jumped out to what looked

like a very healthy lead. Eddie White was the winner of the first

Sportsman show at Penn Can. He started outside the front row and didnt

look like he had what it would take to challenge Cook. That all changed

when a mid race caution gathered up the field. On the restart White

jumped into the lead and did not look back. The battle for second had

Cook work hard to hold the position from Dennis Dietrick who made a late

race charge through the field. At the flag it was White followed by

Cook, Dietrick, Jim Crawn, and Dave Locke.

The street stocks also thrilled the crowd with their side by side

racing. Early leaders Jamie Shae and Dick Vauter both experienced

mechanical problems and allowed Glen Wilcox to gain the lead. He was

pressured all race long by Billy Marvin who could not get around Wilcox.

Wilcox would pick up his first feature of the season. Marvin settled for

second with Mike Loney third, Chuck Boman fourth, and Troy Donnelly

fifth.

The pure stock feature was won by Bill Cook.
