BUTCH TITTLE WINS KING OF THE CAN RACE AT PENN CAN SPEEDWAY

Susquehanna, PA.. Butch Tittle of Saylorsburg, Pennsylvania saved one

of this best races of the season for Friday night when he took the lead

early in the fifty lap feature and race off to win the $3000 King of

the Can Season Championship race. In the companion King Championship

races Curt Tunilo of South Montrose won his sixth race of the season in

the late model division making him that divisions winningest driver.

Billy Marvin of Great Bend took the lead late in the thirty lap street

stock feature and won that divisions Championship race. The pure stock

King race was claimed by Mike Decker who won his tenth race of the

year.

The crowd that came to see the modified championship race had two

battles to watch. Last seasons point champion Brian Weaver held a slim

six point lead over Mike Colsten going into this last point race of the

year. Both drivers started the race deep in the pack. Early racing was

excellent with the first caution not coming until lap eleven of the

fifty lap race. Bernie Griffin lead early until Butch Tittle got to the

front after a restart. Tittle continued to lead while Colsten and Weaver

battled. Early on Colsten seemed to have the upper hand while Weaver

struggled in the back of the pack. A mix up would end all of this.

Colsten would slow for the accident allowing Weaver to get by. With

Tittle cruising out front all eyes were on Colsten and Weaver. They made

their way through the field into the top ten. Colsten however had a

tough time getting by Weaver. With two laps remaining Colsten got by

Weaver but was unable two pass another car to get the points needed to

over take Weaver for the championship.

Tittle would win the race while Weaver claimed the championship. Carl

Nagel held off Randy Decker for second with Jeff Bronson coming home

fourth. Kirk Horton finished fifth with Chuck Akulis, Mike Colsten,

Brian Weaver, Mike Nagel, and Bill Tittle rounding out the top ten.

In the late model feature Curt Tunilo dominated the race while Dan

Stone only had to start the feature to claim the point championship, his

first ever. Al Coy drove a very consistent race but never was able to

catch Tunilo. Gene Sharpsteen finished third followed across by Randy

Brokaw and Larry Dilello.

The street stock feature was also very closely contested. John Gage

would lead early until Dick Vauter made the pass for the lead. Vauter

lead the middle stages of the race until a caution bunched the field.

This allowed Billy Marvin to close and eventually get by on the outside.

Vauter would continue to pressure but Marvin held on to win. Coming home

third was a strong closing Mike Loney followed over the line by Glen

Wilcox and Harry Marvin, Jr. The fifth place finish by Harry Marvin was

enough to give him the point championship. The point championship was

completed without one feature win this season after winning many in

years past.

Mike Decker was the big winner in the pure stock division. He won his

tenth feature race of the year and also won the point championship.

Racing action continues at Penn Can Speedway with two big Saturday

night specials. The modifieds will be joined by the sportsman, street

stocks, and pure stocks the next two Saturday nights. The racing will

begin at 6:30 with gates opening at 4:00. With many speedways closed for

the season many drivers are expected to compete in these special races.
