PLAZEK STRETCHES WIN STREAK TO FIVE IN A ROW
CANANDAIGUA, NY...Joe Plazek, from Casitor Centre, Ontario,
Canada, inched out his fifth win in a row at the Canandaigua
Speedway last saturday evening. Plazek was able to pass Bobby
Varin on the final turn of the last lap to claim the victory
before a better then average size crowd, as the grandstands were
filled with numerous Kodak employees on their special night at
the DIRT races. Lance Dusett claimed top honors in the sportsman
main event before his own sponsor, in the VIP suite above the
fourth turn, Honeoye Auto Parts. Les Whyte won the 15-lap street
stock feature, while Dan Mettler took top honors in the 15-lap
enduro main event.
The 35-lap DIRT Modified feature began with Vic Coffey
taking the lead followed by Bobby Varin and Scott Schrader. The
first of just five yellows came on lap four after rookie Scott
Updyke came to a stop on the back stretch. Coffey would remain
the leader throughout the first 26 laps and Varin would run
second. On lap eleven the yellow flew when Gil Tegg Jr. suffered
a flat tire. But an almost immediate green flag restart put Tegg
down a lap. On lap 13 the yellow came out for the third time when
Tegg came to a stop inside the first turn.
On lap 27 Varin used the inside of the first turn to place a
move on Coffey for the lead after a restart created when Darryl
Ruggles came to a stop in the fourth turn. Coffey, who had
drifted a little too high in the turn also gave up second to
Plazek. A battle between Plazek and Varin had the excited crowd
on edge.Plazek first tried the high road and then low, but each
time Varin was up to the challenge. On the final lap Plazek moved
past Varin to claim the victory. Coffey held on to third with Pat
Ward in fourth and John Moravec finishing fifth.
The 20-lap sportsman feature looked to run without a yellow
flag, until lap 10 when the only yellow in the race had to be
thrown after the second and third place cars came together in the
third turn. The results of this encounter found Jerry Haers, the
second place car, sitting sideways on the track and Todd
Henderson now running in the place position. Just a few laps
earlier Lance Dusett was able to take the lead from Haers and was
on a mission to stretch out an advantage.
Dusett held firm the remainder of the race and took his
second win of the year. Henderson finished in second followed by
Karl Comfort, Randy Holden and Vince Vitale.
Les Whyte took the lead on the fourth lap from rookie Dave
VanArsdale and romped home with the victory. Four yellow flags
slowed the race. The first one coming on the initial lap when
Kevin Smith was forced to spin out in the first turn. The worst
moment came on lap seven when perennial street stock track
champion Steve Pesarek came out of the fourth turn and lost a
rear axle and wheel assembly. Fortunately no one hit the
dangerous object and Pesarek's car was towed from the track.
Frank Guererri ran a super race, finishing second. Chris ferguson
was third with VanArsdale and Billy Brown rounding out the top
five finishers.
Dan Mettler took the lead on the second lap of the 15-lap
enduro and sped home the winner. Scott Knapp claimed second with
John Juhl in the third and last paying spot.
