PLAZEK RACKS UP WIN NUMBER FOUR IN A ROW AT LAND OF LEGENDS

CANANDAIGUA, NY...Joe Plazek waited until the final laps of

the 35-lap DIRT Modified main event to take the lead from Alan

Johnson and go on to claim his fourth feature in a row at the

Canandaigua Speedway. Track points leader Scott Ridley earned the

victory in the crash marred sportsman event, that also saw the

lights go out on lap 10, as the generator used on the grounds

over heated. Tiger Chapman lead all 15 laps to claim victory in

the street stock main event, while Ron Hawker won the enduro

event.

Scott Schrader used his newly acquired big block to rocket

himself into the lead at the drop of the green flag. But small

block runner Troy Griffin was right there to take over the lead

on the second circuit. Two separate incidents, of cars slowing,

brought out the yellow on lap six. Darryl Ruggles slowed in the

first turn, while Steve Schultz stopped in the third turn.

The restart saw Griffin remain in command, however the green

was short lived as Pat Ward and John Moravec locked bumpers in

the fourth turn. A second effort to restart the race, saw a

number of drivers jockeying for starting position. When the race

finally restarted Griffin held off Bobby Varin. But Varin was not

to be denied. Varin shot passed Griffin on lap eight to gain the

lead. He began to stretch his lead until early race leader Scott

Schrader began to slow on the track and bring out the yellow on

lap ten.

Varin looked to have this race in the bag, until lap 26 when

the yellow flew, but this time it was for Varin himself with a

flat right rear tire. His crew quickly fixed the situation and

fell in at the back of the field. This left Alan Johnson in the

lead followed by Joe Plazek, Bryon Turner, John Moravec, and Gil

Tegg Jr..

Plazek was challenging Johnson. On lap 33 Plazek dove low

coming out of turn four to pull along side of the Thum owned 12T

driven by Johnson. On the back stretch the two seemed to touch

slightly with Plazek taking the lead. Plazek led Johnson across

the finish line followed by Moravec, Turner and Tegg.

In the 20-lap sportsman event it would prove a struggle to

just finish one lap at a time. The race started with gary

Farnsworth leading the first lap, only to lose the lead to Randy

Holden. Holden held on to first until lap eight when on the

restart, Scott Ridley took the lead. A caution on lap 10 for a

stopped Steve Gray on the back stretch proved important, due to

the fact the track lights went off as the safety crews were

removing his car. The darken track waited for nearly 25 minutes

before power was restored.

When racing resumed Ridley held on to the lead the remaining

of the distance. A number of "accidents" forced track officials

to draw penalties and fines on a number of drivers. Following

Ridley across the finish line were Paul Guererri, Holden, Karl

Comfort and Vince Vitale.

Tiger Chapman led all 15 laps from his pole starting

position to win his first Canandaigua Street Stock feature event.

Pre-race favorite Les Whyte suffered tire failure with just a lap

remaining, dropping him from sixth place to a fourteenth place

finish. Chris Ferguson drove a brilliant race to come home in

second followed by Rick Miller, Steve Pesarek and Dave Aurand.

Ron Hawker won the 15-lap enduro which saw a frightening

moment when a tire was "butted" into the fourth turn fencing.

Fortunately no one was injured.

This Saturday will see the return of all the top drivers;

Plazek, Johnson, McCreadie, Tomkins and others to the Land of

Legends. Race time will be at 7 p.m. sharp. It will be Kodak

employee night at the track.
