PRENTICE PULLS OFF LAST LAP PASS FOR THE WIN AT BREWERTON

Race Date AUG 8, 1997

BREWERTON, N.Y.. . . "I didn't think I was going to win tonight. I tried down low over and

over, but Bobby (Varin) kept shutting the door. I had to go up top and try it there," said

Brewerton Speedway modified feature winner Scotty Prentice after pulling of!

f an exciting win for his second main event of the year.

Baker Graphix and Adams Automotive-Hy Tech Auto Supply sponsored yet another night of

outstanding racing action on the D Shaped Dirt Demon.

Prentice chased Varin throughout the race, but he could not pull off the pass until the

closing stages. On the 34th lap Prentice took it to the high side entering the third turn and

made the pass as the duo headed down the front stretch. Prentice got the w!

in while Varin, with his best run of the year, finished second. Tim Fuller and Pat Ward ran

right with the leaders, as it was a four-car battle during the final seven laps.

At the green it was small block high point man Chuck Bower setting the pace and he

maintained the advantage for six laps. However, on the sixth circuit Varin took the 111 to

the low side in the backstretch and had the lead as the pair hit the third turn. !

The yellow came out on the third lap for the crash which involved the top three point men,

Bob McCreadie got around and was hit by Billy Decker and Tim Fuller. All three sustained

minimal damage, but had to go the rear. On the restart it was Varin with Jim !

Phelps breathing down his tail. As the race hit the halfway point it was Varin, Jim Phelps,

Ward, Prentice, Gil Tegg, Decker, Fuller, Bower, Tim McCreadie and Bob McCreadie leading the

way.

Phelps headed for the pits on the 19th lap after a jingle in the fourth turn. He

surrendered the runner up position. Prentice was no-win second and kept looking on the

bottom side. It appeared Varin and Prentice would shoot it out, but suddenly Ward and F!

uller were right there. It was a great battle in the closing stages, but Scott Prentice came

away with the come from behind victory. At the checker it was Prentice followed by Varin,

Fuller, Ward and McCreadie.

In the other three classes in action Rick Wilk ran away with the four cylinders, Tom Horning

made a late pass of John Thayer to win the IMCA main and Troy Van Allen rallied at the end to

garner another dwarf win.

In the IMCA Mods Jim Evans surprised everyone with a strong early run. However, on the

sixth lap Rick Weilland, Randy Baker, Bill Anderson, George Canizano, Rob Keller, Tony Finch,

and Bob Worden all piled up in turn two to bring out the red. On the resta!

rt it was John Thayer gaining the edge, but with four laps to go Horning took the car low

between the first and second turns to take over for good. At the checker it was Eddie O'Neil

and Don Alvord running second and third.

A variety of drivers appeared headed to victory in the dwarf division, but Troy Van

Allen passed Chuck Weiland with three laps to go for the victory. Pat Pontello took the lead

at the start, but Jim Coher went to the front by the end of the first lap. On !

the sixth lap Weiland went past Coher and was running strong. Van Allen stormed to the front

and pressured the leader lap after lap. However, Weiland couldn't hold on and Troy Van Allen

was victorious. Runner up was Weiland while Coher, with his best run of!

the year, was third.

Rick Wilk simply dominated the field in the four cylinder feature event to win by nearly

a quarter of a lap over Gary Morrisette Jr. Bill Clark took to the point early, but Bob Haws

worked his way to the point. However, on the sixth lap it was Wilk storm!

ing past and he proceeded to break away from the field. It was an easy victory for the winner

as Morrisette settled for second and Jim Olin third.

Coming up on Friday night will be another four-division show on Annette O'Neil Memorial

Night. Racing takes to the track at 7:30 p.m.
