MARTY CONLON TAKES BLACK ROCK MODIFIED WIN
DUNDEE,N.Y...7/25/97...Marty Conlon, out of Lansing,N.Y., picked up his first Modified victory last Friday night at the Black Rock Speedway. Jeff Kappesser was the winner of the Big Flats Manufactured Housing Feature for the Modifieds. Steve Perry, out of Penn Yan,N.Y., put the Ron Yonge #77 in victory lane in the Super-Stock division, while Steve Brace was the winner in Pro-
Stocks, and Tommy Stewart was victorious in the 4 Cyl. Stocks.
Marty Conlon became the 13th different winner in the Modified division at the Black Rock Speedway, on Hilliard Corporation, Skip Gibbs Memorial race night. Conlon had his '97 Olsen #36 hooked up to the blue clay on this night,
but it was a hard fought battle through out the 25 lap distance. Outside pole sitter,"Jungle" Jim Schuyler, jumped out to the early lead, and in the early going, looked to have the race well in hand, as he moved out to a several car length advantage, but a lap 6 caution for a mix up in the first turn involving Steve Hartman, Walt Mitchell, and rookie Aaron Jacobus, bounced up
the field. Mitchell once again left the speedway on the hook. As the race was restarted, Schuyler and Don Lawson were racing wheel to wheel for the lead. On lap 7, Marty Conlon had jumped into the number two spot after starting sixth on the grid. Lap nine saw another yellow flag, this time for a turn one jingle involving the luckless Billy Borden and Stacy Jackson. With the green lights back on the battle raged on for the lead with Schuyler, and Conlon racing neck and neck, while Mike Ward was running a tight third. Lap 12 saw the yellow lights twinkling in the Summer night, this time it was for Jim Schuyler, as he went over the bank in the third turn. Mike Ward had his 45M in the lead on the
re-start, and he was closely being followed by Conlon, Lyle Sherwood, and Charlie Donk. Lyle Sherwood was starting his patented outside drive to the front, and took the lead on lap 16. Once out in front it seemed that Sheerwood was going to cruise into victory lane unchallenged. With victory well in sight, something in the front end broke on the #17 Modified, and he spun in front of the field in turn one on lap 23!! This put Conlon on the point, and he was able to lead the remaining two laps and pick up his initial win for 1997 at the "Rock". Mike Ward held on for second, third was, Charlie Donk, fourth went to, Billy VanPelt, and rounding out the top five was, Terry Hough.
Heats went to, Chuck Kennison, Walt Mitchell, Jim Schuyler, and Mike Ward.
In the Big Flats Manufactured Housing Feature, point leader, Jeff Kappesser took the win, while Fred Buckley got second, third went to, Chris Lewis, and the fourth and final qualifier was Dave Machuga. Ron White finished fifth in the Fran Hilton 3A, and was added to the feature field due to his top five point status.
Steve Perry put the Polmanteer's Mobil, Ron Yonge owned #77 in to victory lane in the Super-Stock division last Friday night at the Black Rock Speedway. At the drop of the green, John Rekszis jumped out to the early lead and held that spot for the first two laps. Lap three saw Carl Cleveland and Steve Perry jump out in front of the field, and they were joined by Earl Harp on the fourth lap, then this trio began to pull away from the pack to have a race of their own. Lap five saw the red lights come on, as first Rob Conklin hit the back stretch wall than Mike Brenning went hard off the third turn. Mike was O.K., but his car had to be cradled to the pits. When the race resumed this high flying trio continued to lead the rest of the field, but point leader
Dale Welty was on his way to join them. On lap seven, Harp got by Cleveland for the runner-up spot, and Welty had moved up to third. The remainder of the event saw a real dog fight for the lead between Perry and Harp. As the checkers were fluttering in the night air, Perry streaked across the line for the win, Harp was second, Dale Welty was third, fourth went to, Carl Cleveland, and rounding out the top five was, Larry Knowles. Heats were taken by, Carl Cleveland, Dale Welty, and Dave Fultz. The consi was taken by "Racer" Ron Divens in his first drive in a Super-Stock.
Steve Brace endured six caution periods in the Pro-Stock feature event, and went on to score his fourth win of the season, and will add to his point lead in the division, Steve Clark who is currently second in points, finished seventh. Following Brace across the line was, Mike Brown in second, third was Mike VanDyke, after another great run. Fourth was, Linwood Standish, rounding out the top five was, Ed Sutryk. Heats went to, Chris McCann, EdSutryk, and Steve Clark.
Tommy Stewart, out of Almond,N.Y. padded his already big point lead with yet another victory in the 4 Cyl. Stock division.
