TERRY HOUGH BECOMES SECOND DOUBLE WINNER IN BLACK ROCK MODIFIEDS

DUNDEE,N.Y......Heavy thunderstorms rumbled through the Dundee area about 40 minutes before race time at the Black Rock Speedway last Friday night. This would have been enough for any promoter to call off the show. But Lin Hough and Sam Kelly stuck by their policy of,"We'll race if at all possible." They were rewarded another great show, as Terry Hough, out of Gang Mills N.Y., became only the second repeat winner in the Modified division in the 1997 season. Dylan DeWert was the winner of the Big Flats Manufactured Housing Feature for the Modifieds. In Super-Stock competition, Rob Conklin picked off his first win of the year, while Steve Clark grabbed his fifth win in the Pro-

Stocks. Tommy Stewart continues his winning ways in the 4 Cyl. Stock divisionwith yet another victory.

Terry Hough was victorious for the second time of the season in the 358 Modifieds at the Black Rock, as he became only the second driver to score two wins in this highly competitive division. Jeff Kappesser is the only other repeat winner. Hough began the event on the outside of the third row, and he was on the move in a hurry, and was chasing early leader,16 year old, ex-go-kart racer Aaron Jacobus. The top five in the early going were,Jacobus, Hough, Mike Ward, Fred Buckley and "Jungle" Jim Schuyler. These five hotshoes formed a break-away pack and began pulling away from the rest of the field. By lap 11 there were only three cars left in this lead pack, and they were all running

wheel to wheel, with Aaron Jacobus still out in front, Fred Buckley was now second, and Hough had found a racing lane on the cushion. On lap 15, Hough blasted into the lead from that outside lane, and he was being chased by Fred Buckley in second and Jacobus in third. On lap 19 the red flag was displayed as fellow Waterloo natives, Jeff Kappesser, and Walt Mitchell came together in turn four. Mitchell required oxygen as he had his "bell rung", and he also bruised his leg in the incident. Mitchell was done for the night, Kappesser finished 15th. On the re-start in the first turn, there was another incident that required a red flag, as Ron White got spun around in the first turn and was hit hard by Charlie Donk and Steve Hartman who had no place to go. None of

the drivers were injured. When the race was restarted, the battle in front of the pack resumed between Terry Hough and Fred Buckley. Buckley tried every trick in the book, but couldn't get around the high flying 1H, and Terry Hough went on to score his second win of the year. Buckley held on for second, third, with his best run of the year was Aaron Jacobus, fourth was Roy Shields, and rounding out the top five was Todd Milton. Heat wins went to Mike Ward, Terry Hough, Chuck Kennison, and Stacy Jackson.

In the Big Flats Manufactured housing feature for the Modifieds, Dylan DeWert to his home-made chassis number 28 to the winner's circle, and he was followed across the line by John Moravec, Walt Mitchell, and the fourth and final qualifier was Jeff Kappesser. DeWert, chose not to transfer to the Modified feature, and took the 20 points and the money for the Big Flats win.

Rob Conklin, out of Dundee,N.Y., grabbed his first win of the season in the Super-Stock division, as he took the lead on a lap 1 re-start. Lap 5 saw the first yellow flag of the event, as Larry Knowles spun in turn three with a little help from point leader Dale Welty. Both cars had to re-start at the rear of the field. As the green flag came back out, Conklin continued to lead, but all eyes were on the division point leaders Welty, and Earl Harp as they worked their way up through this classy field. By lap 13 this duo had worked their way up 9th and 10th, with Welty ahead of Harp. Welty was more successful than Harp on his quest for the win, and as the checkers flew, it was Conklin in for the win, Del Cummings finished second, third was Dale Welty, fourth was Gene Balmer, and rounding out the top five was Bob Buono. Heats went to, Bill Miller, Mike Carapella, and Tony Harris.

Steve Clark, out of Lindley,N.Y., picked up his fifth win of the season in the Pro-Stock division, as he took the lead on lap 12, after starting ninth on the grid. Early leaders were Terry Wheat, and Linwood Standish, but these two drivers weren't around when the checkers were unfurled. Wheat was black flagged for getting into the 4JM of Chris McCann and forcing him into the

front stretch wall. Standish had the motor let go after a good run in the Dan Standish number 24. At the finish it was Steve Clark in for the win, as he tightened up the point battle with Steve Brace, finishing in the runner-up spot for the second week in a row was Brian Knowles. Mike Brown was third, Steve Brace was fourth, and rounding out the top five was rookie Jason Clugstone. Heats were won by,Terry Wheat, Brian Hilliard, and Steve Clark.

Tommy Stewart, out of Almond,N.Y., has been the dominating factor in the 4 Cyl. Stock division at the Black Rock Speedway so far in 1997, and last Friday night was no exception, as he cruised to another win in this entry level division. He started in 10th position, and by lap five he was in the lead, and from then on, it was a battle for second. Finishing behind Stewart was, the "Risingville Rocket", Eddie Mills, third was Karl Weichenthal, fourth went to, Joel Husted, and rounding out the top five was, Brian Austin. Heats were won by, Tommy Stewart, Shawn Brace, and Colby Peterson.

This Friday night at Black Rock, it will be a regular show for all four divisions, and the Hilliard Corporation will be the night's sponsor, and they will be presenting the Skip Gibbs Memorial Race, and there will be extra money on the line for all four winners. Gates open at 5:30, and racing will get Scott Lyons' green flag at 7:30. Black Rock Speedway is located on Route 14A, just outside the village of Dundee.
