McCREADIE, HAERS AND BROWN BIG WINNERS AT CANANDAIGUA

CANANDAIGUA, NY...Bob McCreadie picked up Canandaigua

modified feature win number four during the 1997 campaign last

Saturday evening. Jerry Hears claimed his inaugural victory of

the season in the sportsman division, as did Billy Brown in the

DIRT Street Stock class. Top honors in the enduro went to Walt

Bond.

Ray Bliss Jr. used his pole starting position to lead the

very first lap of the 35-lap modified main event. Bryon Turner

was next to take his turn at the head-of-the-class, as he passed

Bliss for the lead in the third turn. As the yellow flew, on lap

three, Gary Tomkins had just inched out Turner for the lead. The

yellow occurred when Gil Tegg Jr. lost a wheel and slide off the

third turn.

Tomkins made the most of his restart, immediately stretching

out over a ten car advantage on Turner. But again the yellow

appeared when Ron White and Fran Hilton tangled in the third

turn. Bliss had now dropped back to third followed by Scott

Schrader, John Moravec, Vic Coffey, Alan Johnson, Bob McCreadie

and Joe Plazek.

Tomkins continued the lead until lap 10, when the yellow

flew for the third time and bunched the field together. This now

placed McCreadie in fourth behind Tomkins, Turner and Schrader.

The restart saw Tomkins power out to a lead and McCreadie follow

him forwards and challenge for the lead. But as these two began

to run side-by-side the yellow flew for the fourth time when Joe

Plazek looped his number 1 in the first turn.

McCreadie and Tomkins restarted side-by-side, with McCreadie

winning the battle. But the yellow fever was not over yet! On lap

26 the yellow reappeared when Scott Schrader, running one of his

best races of the season, broke in the first turn and slowed on

the track. The charge was now on to the finish with McCreadie

leading Tomkins, Turner, Plazek and Alan Johnson. Ted Bauer was

running in sixth followed by Pat Ward in seventh.

MccReadie held on in the closing laps by reaching out to a

five car advantage over Tomkins. Plazek pulled off a pass on

Turner to take third on lap 30. Turner came home in fourth

distantly followed by Alan Johnson in fifth.

Sportsman feature action saw Steve Gray and Gary Farnsworth

bring the field down to the green flag, with Farnsworth then

taking the early lead. On lap 5 the yellow flew for a spin by

Chris Ridsdale. Ridsdale then immediately brought out the yellow

again with a second spin. At the front of the field Farnsworth

had his hands full with Jerry Haers and Lance Dusett. Haers took

advantage on the restart and took the lead. On lap 10 one of the

wildest hits took place. Bob Champion Jr. looped his car to the

inside of the second turn. Ridsdale then slide along the top of

the Jersey Barrier and slammed into the top portion of the

Champion car. Champion was shaken but was not transported.

Ridsdale was out of the race due to the three yellow rule.

Haers continued to lead with farnsworth in second. A battle

for third, fourth and fifth found Scott Ridley, Rich Swarthout

and Karl Comfort in the thick of things. This would be the final

top five of record in the feature. A post race "P and G" test was

protested against the Swarthout car, but it passed with flying

colors to maintain the fourth place finish for Swarthout.

In street stock action Billy Brown led all 15 laps of the

feature event. In the closing laps, points leader Les Whyte was

putting heavy pressure on Brown, but Brown was up to the

challenge, taking the victory. Whyte finish second followed by

Dave Aurand, Tom Barron and Foster Hughes. As Barron cross the

finish line his front end hopped on the rear of the Aurand car,

sending Barron's car head long into the inside Jersey Barrier at

turn one. Barron's car hit and started flipping. Tom was shaken,

but uninjured in this post race accident.

Walt Bond waited until the final lap of the 15 lap enduro

run to pass Mike Archer for the victory. Archer lead the first 14

laps of the race. Ron Hawker came home in third.
