BOBBY VARIN EARNS FIRST CANANDAIGUA WIN
CANANDAIGUA, NY..7/12/97...Bobby Varin from Sharon Springs, NY, made
the long trip to Canandaigua a profitable one by taking his very
first feature win at the Canandaigua Speedway last Saturday
evening. Paul Guererri earned victory number two in the sportsman
division while Les Whyte racked up win number four at Canandaigua
in the street stock classification. Russ Hefti took top honors in
an exciting enduro main event.
Bryon Turner turned his pole starting position into what
looked like gold as he streaked out into the lead at the drop of
Tommy Burton's green flag for the Earl "Hoot" Frarey Memorial
modified 35-lapper on Ontario County Fairboard night at the
speedway. But before the oil temperatures could even get warm the
yellow flew when Fran Hilton and Chuck Hebing spun, making
contact in the third turn. The restart was not much better as
Darryl Ruggles was forced to stop in the middle of the fourth
turn, causing the second yellow of the event. With two laps in
and both being yellow, the racers were looking to make a long
green run. That happened for just two laps as the field was
slowed again when Bob McCreadie suffered a flat tire and stopped
in the fourth turn. The attempt at the restart saw Ray Bliss Jr.
stop in the second turn for the fourth yellow of the race.
One more yellow, for a spin by Chuck Hebing on lap 7, forced
the field to regroup yet again. On this last restart Bobby Varin
took the lead from Turner. The track would now stay green for the
time needed to for Varin to stretch out a substantial lead over
Gary Tomkins. Tomkins in turn stretched out a thirty car lead
over third place runner Charlie Donk. The yellow then flew for
debris in the first turn. On the restart Varin seemed to be able
to stretch his lead at will over Tomkins.
The final yellow saw some controversy as the scorers placed
Joe Plazek ahead of John Moravec. Moravec felt he still was in
front of Plazek. However as the green flew Plazek powered away
from Moravec and into third, as Donk was now battling Moravec for
fourth. In the closing laps Bob McCreadie was able to catch
Moravec, nipping him at the finish by a mere bumper. Moravec had
to settle for fifth. Varin took the victory followed by Tomkins,
Plazek and McCreadie.
In sportsman action Paul Guererri led from start to finish
of the 20-lap main event. On lap four the yellow flew when Scott
Ridley made contact with the rear of the Rich Swarthout machine.
Ridley, the track sportsman points leader, then took action by
hitting the Swarthout car under caution. Ridley was then black
flagged for the evening.
Guererri took the win over Chuck Graham, Vince Vitale, Todd
Henderson and Karl Comfort.
There were five lead changes in the 15-lap street stock
feature. Randy Miller was recorded as the first driver to lead
the race. On lap two Chris Ferguson took over the top spot, as
Foster Hughes spit off a rear wheel going down the back stretch
and directly into the pits. Ferguson led until lap 10, when Les
Whyte took over with a down low move out of turn two. Whyte then
found himself in a side-by-side battle with Frank Guererri.
Guererri was recorded as the leader on lap 11, but Whyte
immediately got the lead back until the finish. Guererri finished
in second followed by last week's winner David Aurand and
Ferguson. Only two yellows slowed the race.
Fred Salsburg looked to have victory in his sights for the
second week in a row, when a lapped car knocked him out of the
lead in turn four of the final lap of the enduro race. He
recovered to finish second behind Russ Hefti.
This Saturday night will see a complete program of
modifieds, sportsman, street stocks and enduros on tap, starting
at 7 p.m. It will be senior citizens night at the track.
