PRENTICE, LIAS, FURLONG AND GRANOWSKI VISIT VICTORY LANE AT BREWERTON

For IMMEDIATE RELEASE Race date July 11, 1997

Brewerton, N.Y.-Another new face joined the winner's circle at the Brewerton Speedway on

Exide Battery-Carquest Night at the D-Shaped DIRT Demon. Central Square driver Scott Prentice

captured his first main event of the year in his family owned 47. Prentice!

held off the charge of Bob McCreadie and Pat Ward. In victory lane he indicated, "Our other

car didn't work and we thought we would try this one. I think we'll keep running it." The

Prentice car was originally built to compete on the mile at Syracuse, but !

ironically it showed it could master the short surface on the three-eighth's of a mile track.

Meanwhile, Greg Furlong captured the dwarf main, Sean Lias snapped a season long drought in

the IMCA division and it was Ed Granoski coming on in the late stages t!

o win the four cylinder feature.

Roger Phelps took the lead from his outside front row starting spot, but two laps later it

was Gil Tegg leading the way. On the sixth lap Bob Melone ended up with front-end damage in

the second turn, but on the restart Scott Prentice took over. By the tent!

h lap it was Billy Decker closing in on Prentice, but the eventual winner was able to

continue to set the pace. On the 16th lap the field bunched again at Bobby Varin's right

front was ripped off. As the race reached the halfway point it was Prentice, Decke!

r, Pat Ward, Bob McCreadie and Gill Tegg holding down the top five positions. A lap later

Ward powered under Decker for the runner up spot, but Bob McCreadie was on the move. With

nine laps to go McCreadie was second and started to pressure Prentice. Bob p!

ulled down low and nearly pulled off the pass with a few laps left, but Prentice drove away

for his biggest win of the season. Following Prentice and McCreadie were Pat Ward, Billy

Decker and Tim McCreadie.

In the 20-lap dwarf feature Greg Furlong started12th and by the fifth lap was seventh. On a

restart after a yellow Furlong went from seventh to first in one lap as he dove under Jim

Gray and Frank Doll Jr. Furlong ran off for his second win of the year. The!

race was redflagged on the 11th lap as Butch Wadsworth flipped wildly down the front

stretch. His car was extensively damaged, but the driver was only shaken by the crash. At

the checker it was Greg Furlong winning over Troy Van Allen, Frank Doll, C. J. C!

rawford and Buddy Lewis.

Many new faces were running toward the front of the IMCA main event as John Thayer set the

early pace, but on the ninth lap defending track champion Sean Lias went into the lead. Lias

was threatened in the waning stages of the event by newcomer Craig Simmo!

ns, but held on for the win. Lias was followed by Simmons, Rob Keller, Thayer and Curt

Stiles.

The four cylinder main event was a side-by-side battle between Ed Granoski and Bill

Klinkowsky. In the early stages Klinkowsky was on top, but by the second circuit Bob Haws

took over. A scramble near the midway point saw Granoski go in front again while Ge!

orge Kirchoff was solidly in the lead group. Granoski gained his second win of the year while

Klinkowsky settled for second. In third was Haws followed by Kirchoff and Jim Olin.

Pit Stops-Heats went to Lias, Rob Keller and New Hampshire's Len West in IMCA competition,

Prentice and Tegg won mod prelims. Frank Doll and Furlong were tops in their dwarf heats.
